City Forces Group to Remove Anarchy Symbol, Labeling It “Hate Material”

An anarchist group in Hamilton, a city in the Canadian province of Ontario, has been ordered by officials to remove an anarchy symbol from its headquarters. The officials have declared that the symbol is “hate material similar to the swastika” despite police distancing themselves from the city’s position.

“The anarchist symbol is considered hate material by the City of Hamilton and Hamilton Police Services and as such, must be removed,” city spokesperson Marie Fitzpatrick wrote in an email to CBC News.

However, despite the claim by city officials that the anarchy symbol represents “hate material,” local police disputed that label. The symbol “does not meet the threshold of a hate crime,” Const. Jerome Stewart of the Hamilton police said according to CBC News.

Saudi Arabia is using Canada to send a message, analysts say

"It's pretty clear that [Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman] is using Canada to send a message to the rest of the world that if you want to trade with Saudi Arabia, then you need to shut up on human rights," said Nader Hashemi, director of the University of Denver's Center for Middle East Studies at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies.

Hashemi said the root cause of the diplomatic crisis with Canada is bin Salman himself.

SAUDI CRACKDOWN ON CANADA COULD BACKFIRE

“The Saudi leadership wants to drive home a message that it’s fine to invest in Saudi Arabia and bring your money to Saudi Arabia, but that there are red lines that should not be crossed,” Riccardo Fabiani, a geopolitical analyst at Energy Aspects, told Bloomberg, but warned that such strategy could backfire.

Analysts are currently not sure how the feud will unfold, but Aurel Braun, a professor of political science and international relations at the University of Toronto, told Canada’s Global News that Saudi Arabia is unlikely to back down and reverse all its retaliatory measures without getting something back from Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is not apologizing for his country’s call that the Saudis release human rights activists.

Saudi claims ‘badge of pride’ in break with Canada

Canada’s foreign ministry raised alarm over the arrest of a number of Saudi activists, including Samar Badawi, the sister of the jailed blogger Raif Badawi. Raif’s wife and children reside in Canada.

Most irksome to the Saudi authorities, Canada labeled those arrested as “peaceful human rights activists” and called for their “immediate release.”

The Saudi foreign ministry snapped back with a barrage of Tweets, calling the Canadian appeal an attack on its sovereignty, announcing a freeze on new trade deals, and declaring the Canadian ambassador a “persona non grata.”

Riyadh quickly cancelled all academic scholarships for its students in Canada, who number in the thousands. A $15 billion sale of Canadian combat vehicles, inked under the previous administration, hangs in the balance.

It was a shock response, but one that analysts say was calibrated to send a big message with minimal cost.

Canada’s liberal image gets snared by $11.5bn Saudi arms deal

A dramatic spat with Saudi Arabia has forced Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to enter the public fray in a bid to calm tempers. But what’s bothering Canada is the possible loss of a major Saudi arms contract.

The row erupted last weekend when Canada’s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland issued a stern rebuke to Saudi Arabia over the arrest of women’s rights activists in the oil-rich kingdom. One of those arrested, Samar Badawi, has family connections to Canadian citizens.

The Saudis hit back immediately with a fierce response. Riyadh said it was expelling the Canadian ambassador, and recalled its own envoy from Ottawa. Saudi Arabia also warned it was cancelling all new trade and investments in Canada.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale is on record saying the Danforth killer was not known to his ministry. That’s possible, but very unlikely. With a brother in possession of enough poison to kill the entire country dozens of times over, the odds of the Danforth killer NOT being on federal radar are pretty small.

When contacted about the Carfentanil seizure and its potential lethality, the Ministry of Public Safety chose not to comment. The government doesn’t have the courage to say the seizure of 42 kilograms of Carfentanil foiled a deadly terrorist attack.

We get it. If they admit the terrorist angle they strike fear into the hearts of millions of people. We understand why the government would be reluctant to do so.

Farmer Converts 40,000 Acres Into Largest Organic Farm In Canada

In what could possibly be the world’s largest agricultural feat, Canadian farmer Travis Heide is in the process of converting his 40,000-acre farm entirely to organic.

Heide’s farm is large enough to produce 2,200,000 bushels of wheat per year. Although he has been mostly quiet about his transition to organic, his company Organics Canada Ltd. is set to boom as he will begin producing oats, lentils, peas, wheat and hemp all organically.

Currently, the farm is half-organic and half-conventionally grown, but by 2020 Travis plans to convert his entire farm to organic.

Saudi Arabia to dump Canadian assets 'no matter the cost' as diplomatic rift spirals – report

Saudi Arabia is selling off Canadian securities in response to Ottawa’s criticism of the arrest of a female activist, the Financial Times reports. Riyadh says it's ready to take the step despite possible financial losses.

According to the newspaper, Saudi Arabia’s overseas asset managers were told to dump Canadian equities, bonds and cash holdings “no matter the cost.” Saudi Arabia is not a major investor in Canada, according to the FT source, but the Kingdom wants to send a strong signal to authorities in Ottawa.

Saudi Arabia Suspends Flights To Canada as The Diplomatic Confrontation Escalates…

Many people are perplexed about the severity of Saudi Arabia’s response after Justin from Canada and Foreign Minister Crystina Freeland began denouncing KSA’s action in jailing a Saudi national, Samar Badawi (pictured below with Obama and Clinton), likely a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, for action against the government. It certainly appears there is a bigger backstory here than generally visible.

In a world turned upside down by Trump's unorthodox approach to, well, everything, replete with trade wars and diplomatic scandals, we now have one more, and this one was out of the blue. Late on Sunday, Saudi Arabia unexpectedly unleashed diplomatic hell against Canada when it announced it had suspended diplomatic ties and halted new trade and investment dealings with Canada in a dramatic escalation of a dispute over the kingdom’s arrest of a women’s rights activist.

Saudi Arabia also recalled its ambassador to Ottawa and ordered the Canadian envoy to the capital Riyadh to leave within 24 hours, according to a foreign ministry statement cited by the Saudi Press Agency.

Drivers caught in deadly pileup billed for firefighter response

Michele Demyen says she received a bill of $930 because her vehicle was involved in the collision, even though she didn’t require firefighter assistance.

“I was quite surprised that the government is asking the public to pay for what has always been seen as a public service,” she told CTV Edmonton.

Municipal fire departments in Alberta are able to bill the province for costs related to collisions on provincial highways. The government’s insurance company can then turn to drivers involved in the collision to recoup the money, although experts say this is typically done through insurance companies rather than by sending bills directly to drivers.

Possibly the World’s Oldest “Yo Mama” Joke Found on a Tablet in Iraq

Humor doesn’t always translate across time and geography and language barrier — what’s funny in 1820 China might not be humorous in 1984 Canada, for example. Nonetheless, some 3,500 years ago, six riddles were inscribed on a clay tablet in Iraq that could very well have been laughed out loud funny in their time — and one may even contain the oldest “Yo Mama” joke known to man. But in our time, we’re having a bit of trouble.

'Getting screwed over': Man changes gender on ID to get cheaper car insurance

A 23-year-old driver has legally changed his gender so he could significantly reduce his car insurance premium.

The Canadian man, who is identified as David, was fed up with paying extraordinary prices so decided to alter the gender on his birth certificate and driver's license.

He told CBC News he's saved more than $1,100 to date since making the change.

"I'm a man, 100 per cent. Legally, I'm a woman," David said.

"I did it for cheaper car insurance. I didn't feel like getting screwed over anymore.

"It was pretty simple. I just basically asked for it and told (the doctor) that I identify as a woman, or I'd like to identify as a woman, and he wrote me the letter I wanted."

He sent the letter off to the government registration department and within three weeks he received a new birth certificate indicating his gender as female.

CANADIAN MAN CHANGES GENDER ON DRIVER’S LICENSE FOR CHEAPER INSURANCE

A man from Alberta, Canada legally changed his gender in order to receive lower car insurance rates given to women – and the transgender community did not appreciate it.

In a Reddit post titled, “I saved 15% or more on car insurance by switching my gender,” the man, identified as David, said, “I am now a woman. I now pay $1100 less for auto insurance. I won. The end.”

Previously, citizens had to provide evidence of genital surgery, but regulations put in place in 2015 allow Albertans to amend their birth certificates if they “submit a signed affidavit stating the gender they identify as, along with a supporting letter from an accredited physician or psychologist.”

"At this stage, we have no evidence to support these claims," Toronto police said in a statement.

America’s Largest Creditor: Will China End U.S. Trade War with a “Debt Reset”, by Dumping U.S. Treasury Holdings?

One of the reasons why it has seemed so bizarre that the United States would engage in a trade war with its largest creditor in China, is that China has a move that the United States simply can’t defend against.

In terms of any sort of engagement between the United States and China, for at least the last decade or so, it’s always seemed to me that China has an incredibly large amount of leverage over the United States. To the degree that if push comes to shove, China has available actions that the U.S. simply has no answer to.

For the simple reason that they do have the ability to end the U.S. Treasury scheme at any point in time. Because if China did just dump its U.S. Treasury holdings, that would very well likely end the debt bubble overnight.

With focus on Mexico, apprehensions grow at Canadian border

While the Trump administration fortifies the southern border, there’s growing concern over the number of foreigners entering the country illegally across the porous northern border with Canada.

People crossing the border between Vermont and Quebec have paid smugglers up to $4,000, usually payable when the immigrants reach their U.S. destination, according to officials and court documents.

While the number of arrests is tiny compared with the southern border, the human smuggling is just as sophisticated.

“They are very well organized. They have scouted the area. They have scouted us,” said U.S. Border Patrol Agent Richard Ross. “Basically, we are not dealing with the JV team; this is the varsity.”

Driving the increase here, officials say, is the ease of entry into Canada, where visas are no longer required for Mexicans, and a border that receives less scrutiny and resources than the southern border, where thousands fleeing violence in Central America are being detained.

'Like 2 different people': Friend of Faisal Hussain struggles to understand what sparked Danforth rampage

When Aamir Sukhera learned that a young man he saw as a little brother was behind the deadly mass shooting on Toronto's bustling Danforth strip, he couldn't bring himself to believe the news.

Canadian Woman Visits Germany, Questions Holocaust, Gets Tossed in the Slammer

A woman who denied the Holocaust in at least one video posted on YouTube is on trial at a criminal courthouse in Munich.

Monika Schaefer, 59, and her 63-year-old German-Canadian brother, Alfred Schaefer, who lives near Munich, are being tried together for Volksverhetzung, which officially translates in English from the German Criminal Code as “incitement to hatred,” said court spokesperson Florian Gliwitzky in an email to CBC News on Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Here is the kicker. The woman made the YouTube video in CANADA, not Germany. Germany has arrested her for something that is not a crime in Canada and did not occur in German jurisdiction.

Canada should help Holocaust denier on trial in Germany: civil liberties group

A civil liberties group is urging the Canadian government to end the "unjust and immoral" imprisonment of Monika Schaefer, a German-Canadian woman on trial in Germany for publishing videos denying the Holocaust. The Ontario Civil Liberties Association says it's concerned about Canada's apparent unwillingness to come to the aid of Schaefer, who it describes as a Canadian "political prisoner" who was charged with a German criminal law that does not exist in Canada and is contrary to international law ... Schaefer has been in custody since her arrest and her trial is set to continue until August 17, the office says, adding the maximum penalty for each count is three years' imprisonment.

Ontario ordered to remove 5,400 smart meters over safety concerns

Last month, the province’s auditor general criticized smart meters in her 2014 annual report, saying the $2-billion program has so far spent double its projected cost and has not led to the government’s electricity conservation goals being met.

The Ontario environmental commissioner has said the gap between peak and off-peak prices needs to be much higher in order to encourage people to conserve.

Saskatchewan’s recall is expected to cost $15 million and take six to nine months. The province decided to go back to an older model last July after reports of eight smart meter-related failures — fires contained to the meters — in just two months.

An investigation in Saskatchewan found that rain water and contaminants getting into the meters appeared to contribute to them failing.

Canadian Student Arrested by Israeli Forces for Protesting Israeli Demolition of Palestinian Village

Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) is dismayed to learn that a Canadian student has been arrested by Israeli forces for protesting the impending demolition of the Palestinian-Bedouin village of Khan Al-Ahmar in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Michaela Lavis, 21, a Child and Youth Studies student at Ryerson University in Toronto, had joined Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights activists at the demonstration on Thursday morning. Lavis was part of a group of mainly foreigners who attempted to block one of the bulldozers by sitting in a line chained together in front of it. A staff-person with the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem was also arrested at the demonstration.

Lavis had been volunteering in the West Bank city of Ramallah with the human rights organization Defence for Children International-Palestine. She had also been volunteering with an occupational therapist who provides support to special needs children.

July 1st has always been a special day for me. Fifty one years ago today I left the United States and applied for Landed Immigrant Status in Canada. My wife and I picked this date as it was a National Holiday and we figured there would be less security at the Toronto Airport…. and less questions. It was a special day in Canada, it was the 100th anniversary of Confederation.

My suspicions proved correct…. there was only a handful of security personnel on duty and I was asked only two questions…
“How long do you plan on staying in Canada?”…. to which I responded “Forever!”

Canada: Prepare for a bloody trade war!

In late May 2018, the U.S announced its decision (previously telegraphed and widely expected) to forge ahead with tariffs on steel (25 percent) and aluminum (10 percent) imported from Canada (and other countries too!). The mere fact that these tough, yet highly anticipated, tariffs were looming, sent the Canadian economy in a tizzy:

The S&P/TSX Composite Index dipped by 43.87 points, losing 0.27% intra-day
The stock price of Canada’s lone publicly-traded steel company, Stelco Holdings Inc., saw a 3.1% decline
The Loonie dipped by 0.7%; and
The yields on 10-year government of Canada bonds lost 4-basis points, dropping to 2.23%
If just the mere announcing of tariffs can have this type of impact, imagine what kind of ripple-effect the actual imposition and counter-imposition of more duties will have globally!

Japan suspends sale of Canadian wheat over discovery of Monsanto-made GMO

The Japanese Agriculture Ministry suspended its tender and sale of wheat from Canada on Friday. This comes as grain containing a genetically-modified trait was discovered last summer in Canada’s Alberta province.

“We are suspending the tender and sale of Canadian wheat until we confirm that the Canadian wheat that Japan buys contains no GMO,” an official at the Japanese farm ministry said. Japan was the top buyer of Canadian wheat until the mid-2000s, importing millions of tons.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the wheat discovered near a rural road in Alberta underwent herbicide spraying and was not approved for commercial use. It contained a genetically-modified trait developed by Monsanto to withstand the weed-killer Roundup, the CFIA said on Thursday.

M-103 followup: Canadian government is taking “action” against “Islamophobia”

A pricey plan of “action” by Canada’s Heritage Committee against “Islamophobia” is about to launch. It is in response to the controversial anti-Islamophobia Motion M-103, which deemed Canada to be a country with a “climate of fear” toward Muslims and in need of government help for this “fear” to be “quelled.” The Liberal Trudeau government has delivered a long-awaited document signed by Canada’s Heritage Minister, Melanie Joly. The full report can be read at this link.

The Real Reason Trump Lost It With Trudeau?

In Singapore, Trump tweeted more about that piggy bank.

“Why should I, as President of the United States, allow countries to continue to make Massive Trade Surpluses, as they have for decades … (while) the U.S. pays close to the entire cost of NATO-protecting many of these same countries that rip us off on Trade?”

To understand what drives Trump, and explains his exasperation and anger, these remarks are a good place to begin.

Our elites see America as an “indispensable nation,” the premier world power whose ordained duty it is to defend democracy, stand up to dictators and aggressors, and uphold a liberal world order.

They see U.S. wealth and power as splendid tools that fate has given them to shape the future of the planet.

Trump sees America as a nation being milked by allies who free ride on our defense effort, as they engage in trade practices that prosper their own peoples at America’s expense.

Trump snubs May for SECOND time by saying he gets on well with Macron and Trudeau but failing to mention her - as photo of the President in stand-off with G7 leaders goes viral

Donald Trump was accused of snubbing Theresa May for the second time in 48 hours yesterday, as he charged other nations, including Britain, with ‘robbing’ the US.

The US President’s latest rebuff to the Prime Minister came when he failed to mention her name as he left the G7 summit after a blazing trade row with fellow world leaders.

Denying claims of a rift, Mr Trump said he got on well with Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron and Justin Trudeau – but omitted to mention Mrs May.

It came a day after he refused to grant her a one-to-one meeting during the two-day event in Canada, and after Mrs May had arrived at the summit to reports that Mr Trump was tired of her ‘schoolmistress’ tone.

Meanwhile, a photo of the US President in a stand-off with Mrs Merkel and other G7 leaders - including Mrs May - at the summit has gone viral.
