‘A snap election would be a catastrophe', Merkel ally warns

Daniel Günther, Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein, said in an interview with Bild on Monday that a snap election would be a "catastrophe" for the country.

After a national election on September 24th gave Angela Merkel's Christian Union (CDU/CSU) a victory with a weakened vote share, the Chancellor has been exploring a three-way coalition with the Green party and the Free Democrats (FDP). This coalition formation, nicknamed the Jamaica Coalition, has never before been tried at the national level.

Preliminary talks between the parties have made slow progress, raising the possibility that no deal will be reached and the country will once again be called to the polls.

Coalition negotiations continued into a second round of preliminary talks on Monday, with Angela Merkel meeting other party leaders to try to break the deadlock.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Merkel pretended to soften her stance in the migrant issue during the campaign to win votes but once the election was over went right back to her hard line open borders agenda. A new election will be worse for Merkel as a result.

Why Medieval Cats Approved of the Plague

From the 12th century onward there were two distinct attitudes to cats. For many people the cat population operated as important rodent-controllers, and every so often a cat would go beyond being a mere working animal and become a welcome pet inside the house. Working cats and house cats were always popular, but now a negative attitude began to run alongside the friendly one. For some people, the cat was now seen as an evil animal, in league with the Devil. For them, the cat needed to be persecuted if Satan and his followers were to be defeated.

In the following century Pope Gregory IX added his voice to the campaign against the evil cat. He was intent on stamping out a sect of Devil-worshippers in Germany who involved black cats in their rituals.
Webmaster addition: This is what allowed the rats whose fleas carryied the Black Plague to run rampant across Europe.

Social media companies are obliged to delete or block any online “criminal offenses” such as libel, slander, defamation or incitement, within 24 hours of receipt of a user complaint — regardless of whether or the content is accurate or not. Social media companies receive seven days for more complicated cases. If they fail to do so, the German government can fine them up to 50 million euros for failing to comply with the law.

Beached: Germany's Entire Submarine Fleet Out of Action

The entire complement of Germany’s high-tech submarine fleet is out of service, and, to hear the Berlin’s defense minister tell it, it’s not a good thing.

Currently, four of the country's active-duty U-boats — short for 'unterseeboot' or undersea boat, but not to be confused with the thousands of deadly Nazi subs that terrorized the oceans during World War II — are in the process of being serviced in drydock with equipment and communications upgrades, while the two remaining ships of Germany's six U-boat fleet wait their turn.

Berlin's Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen — through spokesperson Jens Flosdorff — has observed that the current state of non-readiness in the German submarine flotilla is less than optimal.

EU anti-trust investigators raid BMW headquarters in Munich

EU anti-trust regulators have raided the offices of automaker BMW in Munich, the company said, in a fresh blow to the German car industry already hit by the Dieselgate scandal.

The European Commission, which refused to confirm the company targeted, said it "can confirm that as of October 16, 2017 its officials carried out an unannounced inspection at the premises of a car manufacturer in Germany."

The inspection was related to "concerns that several German car manufacturers may have violated EU antitrust rules that prohibit cartels and restrictive business practices," a statement said.

The commission added that Daimler was cooperating with the commission and could accordingly offer the firm leniency in the case.

"The inspection is linked to complaints against five auto companies that were reported in the media last July," BMW said in a statement that confirmed the raids.

Follow the money. The Eurogroup rules the Eurozone and its 19 member states. The first rule of Eurogroup is: ‘You don’t talk about Eurogroup!’

A clear analysis is needed of the most important part of the pan-European project: the Eurozone. The Eurozone is the most important because it controls the money in the world’s largest macro-economy.

How to Bring Down the Elephant in the Room

First, a painful, but needed, clarification:

For some this bumping will happen earlier in the list, for others a little later down the list, but the list will be more or less the same for everybody. Proper etiquette, atleast in the West, would want to make us run away from this topic. I won’t. Why? Well, for one thing I am constantly accused of not discussing this elephant. Furthermore, I am afraid that the role this elephant is playing is particularly toxic right now. So let me try to deal with this beast, but first I have to begin with some caveats.

Merkel Lands Fourth Term, But at What Cost?

Angela Merkel will serve as Germany's chancellor for a fourth term, but Sunday's win comes at a high price. The right-wing populists are now the third-strongest party in parliament and her negotiations to create a new government are likely to be complicated.

Preliminary German election results revealed, AfD comes in third

Preliminary results of the German parliamentary election are revealed.

Merkel’s CDU/CSU union is currently in the lead, while it seems that the right-wing opposition party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) will move as the third strongest party into Bundestag.

For the grand CDU/SPD coalition, the results are rather disappointing.

Angela Merkel: 'We need to win back AfD voters' Chancellor downbeat at German election win

The CDU leader was victorious according to exit polls but the result was tempered by Alternative for Germany, the right-wing populist party, winning its first seats in the Bundestag.

She told supporters: "Obviously we hav a new challenge ahead of us and that's the presence of the AfD in the German parliament.

"We will carefully analyse the results because we want to win AfD voters back by looking at their concerns and especially by making good policies."

Major parties face heavy election losses, as Germany shifts to the right

A poll published by public broadcaster ZDF on Friday shows that both the major parties are likely to suffer major losses, while the small right-wing parties are on the rise.

The ZDF Politikbarometer poll shows Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) on 36 percent support, with the Social Democrats (SPD) on a miserable 21.5 percent.

Germany’s two largest parties have been united in a “grand coalition” since 2013, a fact which appears to have led to an erosion in support for both of them.

Why German parties are flyering and advertizing in languages from Russian to English

With so many voters apparently still undecided about who to pick on Sunday, parties have taken to advertizing in several languages, desperate for every vote they can get.

When readers in Germany opened their newspapers earlier this month, they likely weren't surprised to see a full-page campaign advertisement from Chancellor Angela Merkel. The country’s Bundestag elections are, after all, this Sunday.

But if most Germans had started to read the advert, they would have found the text unintelligible. Merkel’s message to voters was written in Turkish, and was printed in Öztürk – a monthly newspaper for Turkish Germans.

In the early 20th century, the world’s dominant superpower looked warily on the rise of a competitor to its supremacy. The machinations of the British to contain the rise of Germany led inexorably to the First World War. Once again in the early 21st century, the world’s dominant superpower is looking warily on the rise of a competitor. Will the American Empire’s machinations to contain the rise of China lead to the Third World War? Or is the American/Chinese conflict another engineered conflict for the benefit of the few at the expense of the many? “Something is Seething in Germany”

That last sentence is very cryptic. I do not know what they mean. Do they mean to say that most who will vote in Berlin, will vote for others such as AfD? There’s no explanation for this, and comments are disabled on the original video.

Merkel booed on final day of campaign rallies in Munich (VIDEO)

Two days before German federal elections, Angela Merkel, who is going for a fourth term as Chancellor, found her closing campaign rally in Munich crashed by right-wing protesters, who booed and heckled her for half an hour as she made her speech.

The loud heckling and whistling was audible on RT Ruptly’s live feed from the Friday rally even before Merkel began to speak, and the organizers eventually had to raise the mic’s volume. This did not prevent the German leader from giving her prepared 30-minute speech, but she added an improvised detail as an opening remark to her opponents.

“With whistling and yelling, one will surely not shape Germany’s future,” Merkel told the protesters on the last day election campaigning is allowed to take place.

German AfD Party Confirms Plans to Probe Merkel's 2015 Decision to Open Borders

German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) intends, once elected to the Bundestag, to launch a parliamentary commission to investigate decision of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to open borders in 2015, without seeking approval from the parliament, a party candidate to the Bundestag in the forthcoming election, Waldemar Birkle, confirmed to Sputnik on Friday.

"Merkel violated the law. This decision [on the opening of the borders] should have been taken by the Bundestag. And this did not happen," Birkle said.

The Crazy Imbalance of Russia-gate

The core absurdity of the Russia-gate frenzy is its complete lack of proportionality.

Tillerson State Dept. Demanding Israel Hand Back Millions in U.S. Military Aid

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been pushing the Trump White House to demand that Israel give back to the United States millions of dollars in military aid, prompting pushback in the West Wing and further fueling ongoing tensions between Foggy Bottom and the White House over a range of key diplomatic issues, according to multiple sources briefed on the situation.

The Washington Free Beacon first reported on Friday that the State Department has been lobbying the White House to call for Israel to hand back some $75 million in U.S. military aid that was awarded to the Jewish state above the Obama administration’s financial request in 2016.

The Bombast of Nikki Haley

She’s a lightweight, and a warmongering globalist.

As Governor of South Carolina, and a member of that state’s House of Representatives, Haley’s foreign policy experience is absolutely nil. Nor does her degree in accounting from Clemson University inspire confidence. Her record thus far has consisted of giving voice to the neoconservative tendency in the GOP – the very people Trump defeated in the GOP primaries. The conventional Republican foreign policy clichés we’ve heard for years pour forth from her mouth like vomit from a drunk. Her recent speech before the American Enterprise Institute on the nuclear deal with Iran is a perfect case in point.

America’s Jews Are Driving America’s Wars

We don’t need a war with Iran because Israel wants one and some rich and powerful American Jews are happy to deliver. Seriously, we don’t need it.

They have been very successful at faking the Iranian threat, so much so that nearly all Republican and most Democratic congressmen as well as much of the media seem to be convinced that Iran needs to be dealt with firmly, most definitely by using the U.S. military, and the sooner the better.

And while they are doing it, the issue that nearly all the Iran haters are Jewish has somehow fallen out of sight, as if it does not matter. But it should matter.

Why Berlin is still holding its breath over Russian cyber attack on election

As the clock ticks down to elections Sunday, Germany's cyber defence nervously hopes it'll be third time lucky after Russia was accused of meddling in the US and French votes.

But even if Berlin avoids a last-minute bombshell of leaks or online sabotage, it sees Moscow's hand in fanning fears of Muslim migrants that are driving the rise of the hard-right.

"Vote Putin for Chancellor" - Majority of the Germans stand by Russia

Four days ahead of the parliamentary election, posters can be seen in the center of Berlin, and not far from Reichstag.

There would be nothing unusual about these posters, if it wasn’t for the photo of the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the text that reads “Vote Putin for Chancellor” right below it.

Angela Merkel embroiled in refugee scandal in huge blow days before German election

A LEAKED internal German government report appears to condemn Chancellor Angel Merkel for opening the country's borders to refugees without first gaining parliamentary approval.

The admonishment comes two days before she seeks a fourth term in power in Sunday's general election - with 20 percent of voters still undecided who they will support.

The report by the Bundestag Scientific Office - a team of non party political legal experts - stated it is the role of the Bundestag to decide on all "matters of essential relevance to the state".

Experts said the opaque diplomatic language used in it signals parliament should have had the final say on the matter "as the decision led to a change in the proportion of non-Germans to Germans in the country".

Influential news magazine Der Spiegel said: "Bundestag lawyers clearly see an unclear legal situation for the border opening.

"This is an explosive opinion on the refugee crisis shortly before the election."

Right-wing AfD party looks set to become Germany’s main opposition party in Sunday’s election as Merkel sees a fall in support following open-door migrant policy

The right wing Alternative for Germany, or AfD, may achieve a third-place finishin elections on Sunday, which would make it the lead opposition party in the next parliament.

It is a prospect viewed with trepidation by many in Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel recently described heckling she received from members of the party during a recent election meeting as 'a kind of intolerance that is very, very difficult'.

Merkel is on course to win a fourth term in office, but her conservative Union bloc is predicted to fall short of the 41.5 percent support they won in 2013.

No matter how bad things look now, Hillary President would have been infinitely worse!

In conclusion, what I take away from Trump's UN speech is a sense of relief for the rest of the planet and a sense of real worry for the US. Ever since the Neocons overthrew Trump and made him what is colloquially referred to as their “bitch” the US foreign policy has come to a virtual standstill.

Collapse of Iran deal would send a 'terrible signal': Germany

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has warned that any US move to scrap Iran's nuclear deal would discourage other countries from going to the negotiating table to discuss their nuclear activities.

A collapse of the accord, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), would send a “terrible signal” for other diplomatic efforts, Gabriel said on the sidelines of a UN meeting in New York on Thursday.

“What should motivate countries like North Korea or others to enter into negotiations in the future when the one example of such a deal is being destroyed?” he asked.

Sep 21 13:21

Gabriel: Germany will strive to save Iran nuclear deal

Germany will do all it can to persuade the United States not to abandon the Iranian nuclear agreement, whatever the outcome of German elections on Sunday, Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said on Thursday.

Gabriel told reporters any US move to cancel the Iran deal and impose new sanctions on Tehran would discourage powers such as North Korea from negotiating an end to their own nuclear programmes.

Germany would work with the European Union, France, Britain and where possible China and Russia to press Washington to preserve the deal, under which Iran curbed its nuclear work in exchange for the lifting of sanctions, he said on the sidelines of a UN meeting in New York.

How the UN Covers for US Aggression

UN is not out to get the U.S. Rather, it has largely been America’s tool since its inception, it has repeatedly covered Uncle Sam’s overly-exposed butt as he (a.k.a. “the royal we”) has gone around the world on a three decade-long military bender since the end of the Cold War.

And therein lies the truly pernicious part of the Trumped-up case against the U.N. … because, like so much of America’s growing cult of grievance, it reflects an ever-widening gap between America’s stated ideals and its self-serving behavior around the world.

The arrogance conveyed by Trump’s speech is unprecedented.

I wonder if whoever wrote the deplorable speech intended to embarrass Trump and inadvertently embarrassed America as well, or whether the speechwriter(s) is so imbued with the neoconservative arrogance and hubris of our time that the speechwriter was simply blind to the extraordinary contradictions that stood out like sore thumbs all through the speech.

As German election looms, attacks on AfD increase

As the German federal election is approaching, there is a sharp increase in attacks on Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and its supporters.

On Saturday, around a dozen of camouflaged persons attacked a group of AfD campaigners in the German city of Rostock.

A 4-member campaign team that was promoting the local candidate Stephan Schmidt, was trying to put on posters, when it was attacked by five darkly dressed and partly hooded assailants that were carrying stones.

Removing Offensive Monuments

The eyesore presidential libraries

The social justice warrior charge to purge the United States of all monuments relating in any way to the Confederacy has been rapidly expanding to include the scourge represented by all white people all through history.

Now, I would suggest that turnabout is fair play so if we are all agreeing that monuments must be destroyed to right historic wrongs, I am interested in making up my own little list based on the things that I disapprove of. As readers of this site are aware, I am a critic of illegal behavior by the United States government, to include torture, targeted assassinations by drone and starting wars without any reason to do so, so that would be a good place to start.

Germany Launches Probe After Pentagon's Syrian Arms Smuggling Story Goes Viral

The German government has opened a probe into an illegal Pentagon arms trafficking operation after a bombshell investigative report on the secret program went viral this week.

On Wednesday we reported on the continuing Pentagon arms pipeline to Syria which runs through Europe, the Balkans, and Caucuses, and which is based on a shady network of private contractors and altered US government paperwork. The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) produced conclusive evidence and internal memos proving that not only is the Pentagon currently involved in shipping up to $2.2 billion worth of (mostly old Soviet) weapons from private dealers to US-backed Syrian militants, but is actually manipulating paperwork such as end-user certificates in order to conceal the ultimate destinations of the weaponry (in this case Syria).
