The Eruption of Mount St. Helens in Photos, 1980

Mount St. Helens, located in southwestern Washington, erupted on May 18, 1980. The volcano, used to be a beautiful symmetrical cone about 9,600 feet above sea level. But the eruption, which removed the upper 1,300 feet of the summit, left a horseshoe-shaped crater and a barren wasteland.
