Ron Paul: End wars to fund health care

And to finance health reform, Paul would like to see the US end its overseas military engagements. “I would cut from overseas spending, I would cut from these trillions and trillions of dollars that we have spent over the years and bring our troops home so that we can finance it [health care].

How Politicians Lie About “Budget Cuts” in Maryland (and Elsewhere)

An old political game is for a governor of a state to PROPOSE say, a $2 billion increase in next year’s budget, and then when the legislature can “only” squeeze another $1.5 billion out of the poor, hapless, and helpless taxpayers, the Gov. then decries a “half billion dollars in budget CUTS.” Since most newspapers are little more than the propaganda arms of big government in each state, there is then a chorus of crying, sobbing, moaning, gnashing of teeth, whimpering, and doomsaying over the social catastrophe that is surely imminent.

Israel to use Hitler shot for PR

"It is important that the world know the facts," a spokesperson for Mr Lieberman told the BBC, without giving further detail.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel is using a 1941 photo of Adolf Hitler meeting the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem to justify demolishing a hotel

Here is a photo of Hitler with Britain's Neville Chamberlain. Does this photo give Israel the right to demolish Parliament?

Here is a photo of Hitler with the head of IBM. Does this photo give Israel the right to demolish IBM?

Here is a photo of a group of young Jews from Betar ... wearing Nazi uniforms. Does this photo give Israel the right to kill ... Jews?

Does this next photo make Richard Nixon a rock star? Or Elvis a lying crook? No?

Even for Israel, using that Hitler picture is pretty damned low.

Please post this rebuttal wherever necessary.

This holy anointing oil, as described in the original Hebrew version of the recipe in Exodus (30:22-23), contained over six pounds of kaneh-bosem, a substance identified by respected etymologists, linguists, anthropologists, botanists and other researchers as cannabis, extracted into about six quarts of olive oil, along with a variety of other fragrant herbs. U.S. Deaths Hit A Record High In Afghanistan

A confluence of factors has contributed to July's toll, which is the highest for U.S. troops in Afghanistan in any month since the war began in late 2001. Among them: President Obama's new strategy ordering tens of thousands more U.S. troops to Afghanistan this year, a surge in offensive operations by both U.S. forces and the Taliban, and an increase in insurgents' use of powerful roadside bombs.

So far this month, 31 U.S. troops have died in Afghanistan, surpassing the record of 28 deaths in June 2008. Losses for the entire NATO-led coalition, including British, Canadian, Dutch and other forces, have also spiked this month, feeding growing unease over the war in those countries.

Obama task force backs indefinite detention without trial

On Monday, an Obama administration task force announced it would delay for six months release of a report that was to outline plans for the prosecution of inmates at its Guantnamo Bay prison camp and future prisoners seized in the "war on terror." In its stead came an interim report and a White House press briefing that together indicate President Barack Obama is likely to rely on military tribunals or indefinite detention without trial in cases where evidences against "terror suspects" is scant or tainted by torture.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Indefinite detention?!?

That's what we normally equate with third-world banana republics whose "rule of law" is continually observed in the breach of that law, and not the observation of it.

Indefinite detention is unconstitutional, and a moral outrage against the principals on which this country was founded, as stated in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

We cannot, as a country, talk about human rights, human dignity, and the rule of law if we cannot observe these values in the functioning of our government.

If these recommendations go forward, the US will not longer be a country under the rule of law: it will have devolved into a country under the rule of men, and that puts this republic in an horrifically deep jeopardy from which it may never recover.

I believe one of the goals of the swine flu vaccine is depopulation. Perhaps it is the goal of a swine flu epidemic as well, whether bio-warfare or hype around a flu season.

We had to do something to turn around the economy and gather real assets behind retirement plans and the social safety net. If not, Americans could find themselves deeply out on a limb. Biden Backs NATO Membership for Ukraine

Speaking in Kiev today on the first stop of a trip to the Black Sea region, Vice President Joe Biden backed Ukrainian membership in NATO, saying the nation had the right to choose which alliances it wanted membership in and assuring the nation that the recent attempts at rapprochement with Russia would not harm US ties with Ukraine.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Joe Biden: can you possibly manage to keep your mouth shut in public, and not further antagonize Russia with this talk of a NATO membership for Ukraine?!?

This is not what is needed to renew positive ties with Russia, and in fact will have just the opposite effect.

One has to wonder if better ties with Russia are really a part of this administration's agenda, with Biden having made that remark.

Pakistan does not have enough troops to deploy to Baluchistan to take on the Taliban without denuding its border with its archenemy, India, the officials said. Dialogue with the Taliban, not more fighting, is in Pakistan’s national interest, they said.

China urges responsible U.S. policy, stable dollar

China will again press the United States at high-level talks next week to protect Beijing's extensive U.S. investments by pursuing sound policies and keeping the dollar stable, a senior official said on Wednesday.

China holds an estimated 70 percent of its $2.13 trillion in currency reserves in dollar assets, mainly government bonds, and officials have expressed worries that massive U.S. pump-priming to revive the economy could sow the seeds of inflation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This government could, of course, make a decent start against its deficit by stopping the global wars of aggression to which it seems, at this point, to be terminally addicted.

Of course, that would be logical.

And much like its predecessor, logic and this administration do not seem to have much of an ongoing relationship.

States Where the Unemployed Are Giving Up

In some U.S. states, nearly half of the job seekers who have stopped looking for work have done so because they simply don't believe they'll find anything. Indeed, the number of discouraged workers nationwide has more than doubled in the past year. This trend won't be reflected in the widely publicized unemployment rate, as discouraged workers aren't included among the unemployed. Still, in states as diverse as Mississippi, South Dakota, and New York, the span of this often invisible slice of workers signals a population losing its hope.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And a short memo to congress: there is no such thing as a "jobless recovery".

Feingold: Obama’s Afghanistan surge might backfire

“I continue to be concerned that the troop increase in Afghanistan will lead to more grim milestones like this one and will not have a lasting impact on our ability to deny al Qaeda a safe haven in that region,” Feingold added. “Indeed, I am concerned that the so-called surge may actually make matters worse by pushing militants into Pakistan, a nuclear-armed nation which is still not effectively dealing with terrorist sanctuaries in that country.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Between Clinton's remarks yesterday that the perpetrators of 9/11 have found safe haven in Pakistan, coupled with Feingold's remarks today, one has to wonder if the stage is being set for an outright invasion of Pakistan.

Of course, I would almost be willing to be that the current Pakistani leadership has been bought off by American "aid" to the degree that they can spend their remaining years in....Geneva or Paris, or maybe even Aspen.

Deep-Sixing the F-22

I’ll believe it when it finally happens. Kucinich: ‘Is the Fed paying banks not to loan money?’

Before the committee — which assembled Tuesday to hear the testimony of Neil Barofsky the Special Inspector General for TARP, along with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke — Kucinich wondered aloud if “banks are parking a historic amount of taxpayers’ money in the Federal Reserve while the businesses and consumers across America are starved for credit,” and whether the Federal Reserve is paying banks to avoid making loans.

To support his line of questioning, he cited a Bloomberg report which noted that “banks’ excess reserves at the Fed rose to a record $877.1 billion daily average in the two weeks ended May 20, from $2 billion a year earlier.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Many households, which handle their credit responsibly, always paying early with much more than the minimum payment, have noticed that the interest on their credit cards has spiked astronomically, for no good reason.

It might be a good time to make sure you know just what your balances are, what the interest rate is (if it is fixed, or variable with the prime), and if there has been a recent spike in your interest rate.

You can can generally request, in writing, that your interest rate be lowered, and let the credit card company know that if they find this is impossible, you will take up your concerns with the individual executive who handles the credit division, and will be copying Senator Chris Dodd, head of the Senate Banking Committee on this issue.

Bottled water companies win fluoride battle

Anti-fluoride advocate Keith Oakley denounced the move to add fluoride to bottled water, saying it would make it harder for him and his colleagues to access water.

He said the move would also backfire.

"If they want to put fluoride in there, then that's their problem. But bottled water sales will go down," he said.

"It's a bit disappointing but at the very least it should be labelled so I can still buy non-fluoridated water."

Webmaster's Commentary:

What I want to know is WHY the bottled water companies wanted so badly to put flouride in their bottled waters in a nation where apparently they cannot label the bottles as containing it. Why spend the added money putting in a chemical that at least some of their customers do not want, and those that do want it cannot know it is there?

You Must Have Health Insurance, It's The LAW

In the case of health insurance, the idea is to eliminate cherry picking and selection bias. The problem is that people who believe they're more inclined to need health care will buy health insurance, while the insurers are searching for healthy people, while trying to steer clear of the sick. Theoretically this is solved by just creating one giant risk pool with no selection and no cherry picking.

It also has another benefit: insurance companies like it, and it's the one thing that could get them on board. That's not a mystery. Mandating insurance means more business for them, and since anti-cherry picking laws are a political reality, this is their quid-pro-quo.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The problem is that when car insurance was made mandatory, prices went up, and payouts declined, because the insurance companies knew you HAD to buy their product no matter what.

World's largest telescope to be built in Hawaii

Hawaii was chosen Tuesday as the site for the world's biggest telescope, a device so powerful that it will allow scientists to see some 13 billion light years away and get a glimpse into the early years of the universe.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I love the fact that the telescope will be built here, but oh, are they in for a disappointment regarding seeing the edge of the universe.

According to former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Thomas Moorer, “Those men were then betrayed and left to die by our own government.” The survivors are still awaiting justice.

Israel leaves the inhabitants of the West bank thirsty

Join us in a protest against the water shortages caused by the occupation

Dry water taps – no water for drinking or bathing, many months during the summer heat. Since March this is the situation of many families in the villages Qarawat Bani Zayed, Kufr ‘Ein, Ramani & Nabi Salah, 15,000 people. In the same time, these Palestinian villagers can see beyond the settlements’ fences a different situation. They see green lawns and sprinklers irrigating the whole day. A similar situation exsists in many other parts of the West Bank.

Detroit: The Post-Apocalyptic Future of American Cities?

Here’s a glimpse of a Turn Key Approach to Urban Wasteland Management ™. Last week I had a chance to talk to a friend who just got back from Detroit and boy did he get an eyeful of America’s Future. After listening to him describe Detroit , it’s obvious that it has all fallen apart. First of all, there’s very little civil authority or regular civil government remaining and in operation. Almost everything has been turned over to these so-called Private Management Companies. And this is how it’s being done. They block out areas, in which 80% or more of the houses have been foreclosed on, which happens to be almost the entire city and county. They have selectively begun to bulldoze the properties which have been foreclosed on. The rest have been boarded up.

European court: Israel boycotts are unlawful discrimination

On Thursday, the Council of Europe's European Court of Human Rights upheld a French ruling that it was illegal and discriminatory to boycott Israeli goods, and that making it illegal to call for a boycott of Israeli goods did not constitute a violation of one's freedom of expression.

FILM REVIEW: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Delayed a year, the sixth film installment in J.K. Rowling’s wondrous Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was finally released in theaters last week and this Harry Potter fan was left wondering why we had to wait so long for a film that was a bit too long and a bit underwhelming in its execution.

And did I say rushed? Yes, Half-Blood Prince felt rushed, strangely enough. Sure, it’s hard to squeeze hundreds of pages of a book into a two-and-a-half hour movie, but important information in the book was overlooked, left out entirely or briefly addressed in favor of scenes of Hogwarts students “snogging” (to us Yanks that’s “making out”) and being silly teens, their hormones-a-ragin’.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Normally I would not carry a film review, but I ran this one because I too found the latest Harry Potter film dull and boring and way too long. As a film-maker myself, I would have cut an hour out of the film and not lost what little story was actually there, and indeed it did feel like something important was missing in the story. By the time Snapes admits that he is the Half-blood Prince, my response was "who cares?" It felt like a hook for the next film was being set, even though the odds of my seeing that next film were dwindling by the minute.

Which brings me to my point.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the second film in a row I was induced into seeing because of the RottenTomatoes website. RT had this film rated at 85%. A similar high score had been attached to the recent Star Trek film, and that too had proved a disappointment.

Therefore, I suspect that a great many of these emails advertising hundreds of dollars a day to post to the web are actually hiring workers to post positive reviews for films, TV shows, music, products, Israel, etc.

I guess the advertisers do not believe in democratic process and have decided it is worth their cash to hijack the online discussions.

But, like Israel's recruiting of online propagandists, knowing that such practices exist is the first step in negating their effects.

New York Medicaid Fraud May Reach Into Billions

It has drawn dentists like Dr. Dolly Rosen, who within 12 months somehow built the state's biggest Medicaid dental practice out of a Brooklyn storefront, where she claimed to have performed as many as 991 procedures a day in 2003. After The New York Times discovered her extraordinary billings through a computer analysis and questioned the state about them, Dr. Rosen and two associates were indicted on charges of stealing more than $1 million from the program.

SIX BUSTED FOR $47M MEDICAID SCAM

Over the past ten years, Alexander Levy, with the help of several accomplices, allegedly controlled a string of health care entities to illegally obtain payment for the treatment of Medicaid recipients and then launder the profits, authorities said.

According to the criminal charges filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court and a companion civil suit filed by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Levy was excluded from any participation in the Medicaid program by the New York State Department of Health in 1997 for submitting false claims to Medicaid for medically unnecessary services and for services that were never actually performed.

HEROES OR TURNCOATS? ~~ THE GROUP BEHIND IDF ABUSE CHARGES

To some, they are courageous heroes bringing transparency to the conduct of the Israel Defense Forces. To others, they are a collection of turncoats who publish unaccountable and unverifiable reports, motivated by politics and a hatred of their military.

Breaking the Silence, a group composed of army veterans and reservists, thrust itself into the news July 15 with its release of a report claiming that during Israel’s invasion of Gaza last winter, Palestinians were used as human shields, hundreds of houses and mosques were destroyed for no military purpose, phosphorous gas was fired in the direction of populated areas and private property was destroyed. The group cited anonymous testimonies it said it had collected from IDF soldiers.

In a new piece for Salon.com, Jeff Sharlet has more on the domestic side of the militarist-fundamentalist drive to devour the state, which we wrote about here yesterday. Sharlet writes of "The Family" -- the self-described "Christian Mafia" centered on the "C Street House" in Washington -- which for decades has spread its invisible, insidious influence throughout the U.S. government, while supporting mass-murdering dictators, rapacious crony capitalism -- and providing convenient cover and absolution for the high crimes and sexual misdemeanors of its members.

Ron Paul: Establishment Can No Longer Ignore Calls To Audit The Fed

As Paul states in the video, 272 members of the House, 95 of them Democrats, now support HR 1207, Ron Paul’s “audit the Fed” bill.

In addition, 13 members of the Senate, 2 of which are Democrats, have pledged support for S 604 The Federal Reserve Sunshine act, the companion bill in the Senate.

“I think it is going to be impossible for them just to ignore everything we have done and just walk away, something will be done,” Paul comments. “The big question is will we be able to get something worth while?”

It makes me think about what happened in the 1970s, the last time there was a major economic crisis there was an effort to go after the Fed.

Internet surfers paid to spread Israeli propaganda

The passionate support for Israel expressed on talkback sections of websites, internet chat forums, blogs, Twitter and Facebook may not be all that it seems.

Jews to Reclaim Land in Jordan?

The Israel Land Fund, a group dedicated to restoring Jewish property in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, is reportedly looking east. According to AFP, the organization plans to begin buying historically Jewish properties in Jordan as well.

The plan is in its early stages, and no properties in Jordan have been bought to date. Purchasing would likely take place with the help of Jews in Europe, King said, as Israelis are prohibited from buying land in Jordan under Jordanian law.

The same Jordanian law is enforced by the Palestinian Authority, which views the sale of land to Jews or Israelis as a capital offense. The Land Fund manages to circumvent PA law by buying land through middlemen. In many cases, the group also helps Arab sellers to flee the country in order to avoid PA retribution.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"The Land Fund manages to circumvent PA law by buying land through middlemen."

Subtle, aren't they?!?

This Israeli group will attempt to do the same thing in Jordan.
