The Small Business Surtax

Modified sugarbeets stir controversy

BOULDER, Colo. — A group of six farmers said they'll be financially crippled if Boulder County commissioners don't allow them to grow genetically modified sugarbeets on the open space land they lease. But several residents who spoke at a Thursday night meeting said the county shouldn't allow potentially dangerous crops on public land.

"This is risky technology. I don't want us to be the 'oops' guinea pig," said Mary Rogers, of Boulder. "We don't know the consequences, and we're deluding ourselves if we think we do."

[NOTE: Posted in light of the current danger to the U.K.'s honey bees. The U.K. is the fifth largest producer of sugarbeet.)

Chicago water: In public reports, city silent over sex hormones and painkillers found in treated drinking water

Annual water quality reports mailed to Chicagoans this month didn't say a word about sex hormones, painkillers or anti-cholesterol drugs, even though city officials found traces of pharmaceuticals and other unregulated substances in treated Lake Michigan water during the past year.

Like other cities, Chicago must notify the public if its drinking water contains certain regulated contaminants, including lead, pesticides and harmful bacteria.

But pharmaceutical chemicals, which have been detected in drinking water across the country, are not on that list. So Mayor Richard Daley is technically correct in stating that the "pure, fresh drinking water" pumped to 7 million people in Chicago and the suburbs "meets or exceeds all regulatory standards."

Flu Shots Put Children in the Hospital

At the 105th International Conference of the American Thoracic Society recently held in San Diego, researchers presented a study showing that the flu vaccine – widely touted as a "must have" for children with chronic illnesses – isn't effective in preventing influenza-related hospitalizations in children, especially ones with asthma. But here's the most damning evidence that flu shots aren't the safe, helpful vaccine the Centers for Disease Control ( CDC) and other government agencies claim: the researchers also found that children who get the flu vaccine are more at risk for hospitalization than their peers who do not get the vaccine.

Let's deal with the facts on global warming

The notion of man's use of CO2 as a possible driver of climate has been the subject of several recent Letters to the Editor in the Sun-News. Over geologic time. there has been 15 to 25 times more CO2 than current concentrations; the claim that this time we will reach a tipping point is alarmist, ludicrous, and totally without foundation.

CO2 is a colorless, odorless gas, and essential to life; to regard it as a pollutant is just wrong.

Let us deal with facts - not activism, alarmism, or hyperbole.

Israel occupied Jerusalem in 1967. Since then it has rarely given Palestinian residents permissions to built homes, while it continues to built settlements in and around the city, an act which is illegal by international law.

Wind farms will be a monument to an age when our leaders collectively went off their heads

So far we have spent billions of pounds on building just over 2,000 wind turbines - and yet they contribute barely one per cent of all the electricity that we need.

The combined output of all those 2,000 turbines put together, averaging 700 megawatts, is less than that of a single, medium-sized conventional power station.

What's more, far from being 'free', this pitiful dribble of electricity is twice as expensive as the power we get from the nuclear, gas or coal-fired power stations which currently supply well over 90 per cent of our needs - and we all pay the difference, without knowing it, through our electricity bills.

Lizzie Cheney throws another tantrum...

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, the other major issue I have with Lizzie's latest song and dance is that she is using the same meme as the one she used in defense of her daddy's torture program. She is speculating (because she does not have the clearances to know for sure) that al Qaeda leaders were the target, the ONLY target, of her daddy's hit team. Just like she has strongly defended (without knowing for sure obviously) that her daddy's torture program only targeted terrorists who were going to kill us. Of course we all know the many innocent people who were captured, detained, tortured, never charged, and finally released.

Akiva Eldar / How to apply PR spin to the settlement issue

America's best Jewish minds are wracking their brains, trying to find a magic formula that will put the settlements close to the hearts of Israel's supporters, not to mention its critics. CIA Vet: Agency Doesn't Need Secret Program To Target al Qaeda

Earlier today, we raised a few questions about the notion that the secret CIA program that Dick Cheney reportedly withheld from Congress concerned an effort to kill or capture al Qaeda leaders. And now a top counter-terror expert is doing the same.

Vince Cannistraro, a former CIA counterterrorism chief, told TPMmuckraker that because we've been in a state of war against al Qaeda since just after September 11, there would have been no need for a secret CIA program that received special legal authorization

Webmaster's Commentary:

The claim that Dick Cheney's assassination squad targeted Al Qaeda appears to be a cover, most likely for the assassination squad targeting people closer to home, like Dr. Kelly and Paul Wellstone.

Israeli minister of transportation and road safety Yisrael Katz has ordered a change in all Arab names of Palestinian towns and cities that appear on signs on the streets into Hebrew names.

Britain revokes arms licences for Israeli navy guns

Updated at: 1018 PST, Tuesday, July 14, 2009

LONDON: Britain has revoked export licenses for weapons on Israeli navy missile boats because of their use during the offensive against the Gaza Strip.

The licences apparently covered spare parts for guns on the Sa'ar 4.5 ships, which reportedly fired missiles and artillery shells into the Palestinian coastal territory during the three-week war, which started in late December.

A spokesman for Amnesty International, citing the "weight of evidence" that Israel had committed war crimes in Gaza, said: "It's a step forward but it doesn't go nearly far enough."

Crystal Ball Gazing: The Future Is Deflation

The subtext of the financial crisis is class warfare, a fact that mainstream economists would rather ignore than invoke the musty imagery of disheveled revolutionaries and Soviet-era repression. Now the top 1 percent of wealth holders own more than twice as much as the bottom 80% of the population. Ex-CIA agent: Zubaydah waterboarded before DoJ memos approved

A former U.S. intelligence agent said in a report published Monday that terror suspect Abu Zubaydah was subjected to simulated drowning months before the Bush administration’s Department of Justice had written memos approving the use of waterboarding.

The claim strikes a serious blow to repeated Bush administration arguments that no laws were broken in the torture of prisoners because legal guidelines had been closely followed.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There were no guidelines for this immoral use of torture, because the people ordering the torture had and have a complete contempt for the concept of the rule of law, and against every human rights treaty to which the US has ever been a signatory.

And now, as one "unexpected consequence" of having ordered torture on prisoners of war, should US service people or civilians become captured, we can expect no better treatment for these people than our soldiers meted out at Abu Ghraib.

The amount of maturing loans in commercial real estate will double in 2010 and will continue upward into 2010. The chart is very clear and this is only for debt in CMBS and not held by regional banks which is over $2 trillion. This is the next multi-trillion dollar bailout you have yet to hear about. In fact, while many are discussing a second half recovery higher up officials are already planning a bailout for the commercial real estate industry. The challenge with this bailout is you are asking a public with 26,000,000 unemployed and underemployed Americans to shoulder the debt of largely speculative plays. To many it is palatable to bailout the residential real estate market because the public can understand that (even if it may be wrong) or bailing out the 2 large U.S.

FLASHBACK - Paranoia Grips the U.S. Capital

The film Seven Days In May is one of my all-time favourites. The gripping 1964 drama, starring Burt Lancaster, depicts an attempted coup by far rightists in Washington using a top-secret Pentagon anti-terrorist unit called something like "Contelinpro."

UK embassy official accused of fomenting mass protests in Tehran

A detained British embassy employee in Tehran is to be put on trial as the supposed orchestrator of the mass protests that followed last month's bitterly disputed Iranian presidential election, despite Britain's insistence that the charges against him are false.

Hossein Rassam, 44, is accused of being the "kingpin" and key strategist behind a purported embassy attempt to foment street demonstrations after the 12 June poll, which resulted in the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. David Miliband, the foreign secretary, has dismissed as "wholly without foundation" the notion of British involvement in the protests that brought hundreds of thousands on to the streets for 10 days after the election.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I think Iran should have quit while they were ahead on this one.

American Jewish Group Funding Anti-Israel Propaganda

“The soldiers are the grandchildren of the Nazis’ victims, the Nazis’ survivors. They have come here to consume food quickly and consume life quickly. This is the true image of Israel.” So goes a news story posted on the website of the Nazareth-based NGO I’lam: Media Center for Arab Palestinians in Israel (tinyurl.com/m385me). Founded by Arab Knesset Member Hanin Zoabi, I’lam does not hide its agenda: to question the legitimacy of Israel.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Peace is not achieved by questioning Israel's right to exist but in acknowledging that Israel's right to exist is no greater or lesser than that of Palestine.

Make no mistake: Despite occasional rallies in the dollar, it is on the verge of its worst decline yet. And by the time the dollar’s bear market comes to a close, it will likely be dethroned and supplanted as the world’s reserve currency.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not unpatriotic. I’m just facing the truth. Every fiat currency in the history of the planet has failed and been replaced by a new monetary system. The dollar will be no different.

Crops, ponds destroyed in quest for food safety

Dick Peixoto planted hedges of fennel and flowering cilantro around his organic vegetable fields in the Pajaro Valley near Watsonville to harbor beneficial insects, an alternative to pesticides.

He has since ripped out such plants in the name of food safety, because his big customers demand sterile buffers around his crops. No vegetation. No water. No wildlife of any kind.

"I was driving by a field where a squirrel fed off the end of the field, and so 30 feet in we had to destroy the crop," he said. "On one field where a deer walked through, didn't eat anything, just walked through and you could see the tracks, we had to take out 30 feet on each side of the tracks and annihilate the crop."

Bill Robinson vs. the ADL Thought Police

So where?s the victory? Clearly Robinson deserves acclaim for resisting pressure as the ADL deployed its most seasoned operatives, including Marvin Heir, a rabbi at the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. Only an investigation can identify who mobilized the donor community that threatened UCSB Chancellor Henry Yang with the withdrawal of funds.

What was the motivation for this high profile intimidation campaign? Was the ADL driven simply by the discomfort that two students voiced on their receipt of his email criticizing Israeli policy? Or did the ADL network have its sights on a broader strategic goal?

EU: 'Accept PA State as Full Member of UN'

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana is taking steps to move the establishment of a Palestinian Authority state through the United Nations, whether Israel agrees to it or not.

Solana told a British audience in London on Saturday that Israel and the PA should be given a deadline by which to conclude negotiations for a two-state solution. If a final status agreement is not reached by that time, according to the Reuters news agency, Solana recommended that one be imposed by the United Nations instead.

The Israel Project’s Secret Hasbara Handbook Exposed

The first thing to say is that the entire document is a pathetic piece of propaganda. While it ostensibly is addressed to TIP's leaders and advises them how to shape a pro-Israel message when they lobby Congress, the media and other critical power brokers, the entire thing reeks of desperation and a lost cause.

The U.S. media is indulging in war mongering "yellow journalism" by repeating baseless allegations that Syria is behind the "car bombing" of a popular Lebanese nationalist, while the evidence suggests that the assassination was carried out using a guided missile launched from a plane - a precision penetration bomb - a "targeted killing" technique perfected by Israel.
