911 Shock Opera: The Grand Finale That Wasn't

"In a crime of this magnitude, with so much on the line, not just lives and careers and vast sums of wealth, but this was their one shot - the conspirators one chance to justify multiple illegal wars, a new doctrine of "pre-emptive aggression", the establishment of the "unitary executive" model, the passing of the Patriot Act, the creation of the Trans Afghan Pipeline, wholesale privatization of public assets and wealth, military contracts, and just basically complete and total world domination based really on the successful completion of one act of treasonous terrorism that would galvanize the American people long enough that they would allow all of these things to take place in their name without so much as a whimper - with all that one the line, risk management became of the highest pri

Ahmadinejad Wants To Debate Obama

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad proposed today that United States President Barack Obama contend to a face-to-face debate with him at the United Nations if he is re-elected next month as Iran’s president.

“Of course this time, if I am elected as president by the great nation of Iran, I will extend that invitation [to President Obama] one more time for a debate at the UN headquarters,” President Ahmadinejad said on Monday.
During his previous visit to the United Nations headquarters he invited former US President George W. Bush to join him in a debate on global issues.

Tampa woman stops armed carjacker with her own gun

A Tampa woman refused to be a carjacking victim when she was approached by an armed man who jumped into her car on Thursday.

The woman, who only wants to be identified as Adrianna, pulled out her own gun. "I just leaned forward and punched him in the forehead with my gun," she said. The man "screamed like a girl and almost dropped his gun" as he ran away, she added.

Israel's war effort gains religious imperative

During the Gaza war this year, Schmuel Kaufman, a military rabbi from a West Bank settlement, used to stride between the Israeli soldiers’ tents and urge them to fight what he deemed an “obligatory war” ordained by ancient scripture.

“It’s a holy war to protect women and children from the south of the country after a long period of endurance on our side,” he told The Times. “The commander of the battalion asked me to blow the shofar [a ram’s horn] every time before going into the fighting. I’m blowing the shofar while 500 soldiers stand behind me praying. They went in wrapped in holiness.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Rabbi Kaufman: there is no such thing as a "holy war", period, end of discussion. War is simply a means of achieving a geopolitical end through military action: that's it, short and sweet.

The phrase is simply used to inoculate soldiers into a mental state wherein all the death, destruction, and mayhem they create is justified, because "God (whatever god is being invoked) is absolutely on their side."

In this blissful "spiritual right and might" state of consciousness, normal, moral reflection about what one has actually done to fellow human beings (whose humanity is negated to utterly nothing) just doesn't happen.

And in a nuclear-armed age, that is what makes the addition of religiously sanctioned destruction such a dangerous, and intellectually dishonest, component of warcraft.

Palestinian internal strife drags on

"The picture in Palestine today is worthy of a surreal masterpiece: dialogue between factions in Cairo has come to nil, though it may well have been their last chance; there is an old government in Gaza, usually referred to as dissolved; then there is a new government in the West Bank, ordered by Mahmoud Abbas, which predictably piqued Hamas and spurred, for the first time ever, opposition from within Fatah itself," wrote Mamdouh al Sheikh in an opinion piece for the Emirati daily Al Bayane.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unless some adults in the room in Fatah and Hamas gently knock some heads together here, by the time there is a Palestinian state, it won't be any larger than a postage stamp.

A Katrina of foreclosures hits New York

“Across the street in this black middle-class neighborhood, Patrick Nicholas, a surgical technician in blue scrubs, shakes his dreadlocks and shrugs. He rents but is moving out. ‘The owner got foreclosed and told us to leave,’ he said. Six doors away, past two foreclosed and boarded-up homes, a burly man in a blue union jacket declines to give his name but his problem is evident. A foreclosure notice is pasted to the door of his house. His tone is mournful. ‘Tough times, man,’ he says, ‘Tough, tough times.’”

Webmaster's Commentary:

But Obama can pour trillions of borrowed dollars (you are expected to repay) onto Wall Street.

I know people are anxious for news, I don’t have that much, but here’s all I have so far this morning. People had a comfortable night, the Egyptian security people supplied convoy members with mattresses and bedding, also food and water and kettles for tea making (Important necessities for Irish people LOL)

But there is not really anything to say today except that negotiations continue this morning to get in to Gaza today. I expect an answer in a few hours time as to what the next steps will be.

Rethinking the Costs of Peace

By asking earlier this month for $2.775 billion in military aid to Israel in his FY2010 budget request, it would seem that on this important policy issue President Obama?s commitment is more rhetorical than substantive. Since 1949, according to the Congressional Research Service, the United States has provided to Israel more than $100 billion in military and economic assistance. In 2007, the United States and Israel signed an agreement for $30 billion in additional military aid through FY2018.

A family lost in white phosphorous shelling

By the time Ghada's husband reached the house, his brother Ahmad and some relatives had only minutes ago rushed into the house, carrying away the dead sons and their father on a cart, seeking for an ambulance help. Ahmad (Umm Muhammad's son) said: "By the time we heard the blast, my relatives and I took my father and brothers on a cart, thinking we could save their lives. I didn't know that they all were dead by the time we arrived! We were looking for an ambulance but an Israeli tank appeared in front of us; the Israeli soldier who got out of it ordered us to leave the bodies and run for our lives ... while running away I looked back to see him pouring down sand on them."

Webmaster's Commentary:

So this is the kind of taken by the IDF in the 2009 Israeli assault on Gaza, the same IDF characterized in March of this year by IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi as "... the most moral army in the world."?!?!?!?

Mullen to Israel: Don’t bomb Iran now

As Israel seeks to win Washington’s support for waging war on Iran, the top US military officer warns of serious unintended consequences of military strikes on the country at the present time.

“I think the unintended consequence of a strike against Iran right now would be incredibly serious, as well as the unintended consequences of their achieving a weapon,” Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a Sunday interview with ABC television.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Admiral Mullen:

A: Iran is developing a power plant only. You - and your science advisors - understand, without question, that the level of enrichment of the uranium is far lower for running a power plant than what is needed to build a nuclear weapon. The enrichment the Iranians are doing , as inspected by the IAEA, is completely consistent with that which is necessary for a power plant, not building a weapon.

B. There is no good time for the Israelis (supported, or course, by the US) to go to war with Iran.

And sir, you very well know the reason for this. In terms of strike by anyone on Iran, this issue is the 6,000 lb gorilla, sitting on the Steinway in the living room.

That factor, sir, is Russia.

What precisely are Medvedev, Putin, and the Duma going to do when they see their 7th largest trading partner attacked? Nothing?

Sir, I am not a betting person; but I wouldn't bet, for one second, that the Russian reaction to just such a scenario would be "nothing".

US investigator exposes Iran's nuclear weapons 'shopping list'

Robert Morgenthau, the New York district attorney who is heading a long-term investigation into the Islamic regime's complex web of illicit overseas financial operations, told US senators there was little time left to halt Tehran's atomic weapons programme.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The problem is that when you get right down to Morganthau's actual list, 15,000 kgs of aluminium, 1,700 kgs of graphite, 30,000 kgs of tungsten-copper, 19,000 kgs of tungsten metal powder and 24,500 kgs of maraging steel rods; what you have are materials used in any industrialized nation.

The article goes onto admit that all these materials have benign legitimate uses, but takes the position that Iran should not have any materials that might in any way make Israel nervous. This is akin to banning kitchen matches, because after all, arsonists might be able to use them!

Folks, just keep in mind that we saw the exact same claims made about Iraq.

Like the professional witch hunters of another age, Morgenthau has done very well financially seeing WMDs even where they are not.

Under a decree published in the Venezuela’s official gazette on May 21, the joint venture, named PetroMacareo S.A., is also allowed to process heavy oil and extra heavy oil pumped from the 248 sq. km Junin block 2 in the Orinoco belt. The belt is considered to have the world’s largest oil reserves.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Venezuela, like China and Russia, are making deals to get what they need.

In the immortal words of Tony Soprano, "Fugettaboutit!"

That, ladies and gentlemen, is a failed foreign policy, writ tragically large.

Israel Steals Palestinian Heritage, History

The Israeli exhibition violates international conventions or protocols that Canada has ratified and that protect cultural property during armed conflict. The State of Israel seized the Jordanian-owned Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem in 1967 to take possession of the scrolls and has continued to loot similar Palestinian cultural property from the Occupied Territories ever since. Under the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property and the 1954 Hague Convention along with its two associated protocols, Canada is legally obliged "to take appropriate steps to recover and return any such cultural property" at the request of the wronged party.

How Many Secret Prisons Does Israel Have?

The United Nation’s watchdog on torture has criticised Israel for refusing to allow inspections at a secret prison, dubbed by critics as “Israel’s Guantanamo Bay”, and demanded to know if more such clandestine detention camps are operating.

In a report published on Friday, the Committee Against Torture requested that Israel identify the location of the camp, officially referred to as “Facility 1391”, and allow access to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Findings from Israeli human rights groups show that the prison has in the past been used to hold Arab and Muslim prisoners, including Palestinians, and that routine torture and physical abuse were carried out by interrogators.

Russia FM: Hamas taking more realistic path since Gaza war

Russia's foreign minister said Sunday that Hamas is following a more realistic path after Israel's crushing war against the militant Palestinian group controlling the Gaza Strip.

Sergei Lavrov, who met with the top Hamas political leader in Syria's capital on Saturday, urged the group to agree to a formal truce with Israel, noting that since the end of the war in mid-January there has been less rocket and mortar fire from Gaza into Israel.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Lavrov understands that a true and honorable settlement of the Palestinian statehood issue is the only thing which will ultimately prevent a terrible, regional military catastrophe from overtaking the entire region, and possibly involving the entire world.

Israeli leadership, however, doesn't seem to.

And a small memo to the current Israeli leadership: ethnic cleansing no longer happen in the dark of night, with no witnesses; it happens in the full, blindingly bright, unblinking glare of a 24/7 news cycle in the blogosphere.

It's possible you just might want to consider that before dumping any more depleted uranium weapons (with all the horrendous health implications attached thereto) on Gaza in your next assault.

People no longer want to visit Israel as tourists; they no longer want to buy Israeli products, which is really hurting the Israeli economy right now, big time. And it is the link to global political understanding of what Israel has been doing to Palestinians which is, in large part, responsible for this.

Hubris has a way of coming back at both people - and countries - in some very unexpected ways.

The Social Security system has been looted going back to the Clinton years to cover government budget shortfalls. Suu Kyi ‘likely to be jailed for years’

Ms Suu Kyi faces five years in prison if she is convicted of the charges that she broke the conditions of her current house arrest by allowing an uninvited visitor, a US citizen named John Yettaw, who swam across a lake to her back door this month, to stay and gave him food and drink. “I am not guilty because I have not committed any crime,” Ms Suu Kyi told the court on Friday, according to her lawyer.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This so looks like a setup on the part of the Myanmar government to keep her in prison for what could be the rest of her life that it stinks to high heaven.

The international community can only do so much; ultimately, it will have to be the Myanmar people who must have the final say about the outcome here.

Political and military oppression can only work for so long before there's a backlash, if there are no real improvements in the lives of a country's citizenry.

700,000 overcharged in the great council tax 'cover-up'

A million homeowners have paid the wrong council tax for years in a funding scandal ministers tried to cover up.

New documents have shown that more than 700,000 households may have been overcharged to the tune of tens of millions.

Ministers and officials have known since at least 2005 that many homes were in the wrong tax bands.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is an object lesson for those who insist that the entire US government would never go along with pretending that the 16th Amendment was ratified if in fact it was not.

Gilad Atzmon - The Three-Legged Monster

“Zionism,” writes Philips, “is simply the movement for the self-determination of the Jewish people. And its significance is greater than any other movement of national liberation because Judaism itself rests upon three legs — the people, the religion and the land. If one is lopped off by having its legitimacy denied, the whole thing collapses. That is why anti-Zionism is far more than an unpleasant political position. It is a direct attack on Judaism itself.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Philips is just the latest propagandists to try to equate anti-Zionism with hatred of Jewish people.

It is about the only card Israel has left to play as world opinion of Israel starts to collapse.

Israel Report: Most Police Killed in Gaza War Were ‘Terrorists’

As the war went on the civilian toll in Gaza dwarfed the toll against the police working for the Hamas-run government. Still, criticism of the indiscriminate destruction of police stations and the killing of police en masse was enough of a thorn in then-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s side to order an investigation into the background of the slain police. Now, roughly four months after the end of the siege, the report claims that the vast majority of those police, though indeed indiscriminately killed, happened to be “terrorists” of one stripe or another.

FBI stops supposed ‘Temple Plot’ in New York City

What is most interesting about this is not that we were protected from a supposed terrorist attack, but that the whole “plot” was invented by an FBI informant:

The defendants, in their efforts to acquire weapons, dealt with an informant acting under law enforcement supervision, authorities said. The FBI and other agencies monitored the men and provided an inactive missile and inert C-4 to the informant for the defendants, a federal complaint said.

In June 2008, the informant met Cromitie in Newburgh and Cromitie complained that his parents had lived in Afghanistan and he was upset about the war there and that many Muslim people were being killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by U.S. military forces, officials said.

'Israel will face terror, missiles in future war'

Vilnai made the comments during a session of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, in which he said the Home Front Command would simulate defending against such an assault as part of a large-scale drill to be held next week.

"This isn't an imaginary situation. This isn't detached from reality and if there is a war, it's very likely that this is what will happen," said the deputy minister.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai: what appears to be completely detached from reality is your lack of recognition that it is the issue of how the Palestinians are being treated, in Gaza, Jerusalem, and the West Bank, which is the crux of any possible rage against Israel that its neighbors might harbor.

How to cure the problem? Well, sir, let's chew on these for starters.

1. Declare your borders, period, end of discussion. (Invading Lebanon to steal the Litani River didn't do very well for Israel's reputation in the international community.)

2. Immediately sit down with all levels of Palestinian leadership to declare an iron-clad, absolute cease-fire, while a Palestinian state is established (and not, thank you very much, within the boundaries of Jordan.)
3. Invite countries from around the world to invest in a viable re-building/replanting program for Palestine (the IDF has done such a grand job of burning and otherwise destroying Palestinian crops, as you are well aware)
4. Prepare for a new era of peace, with unprecedented economic and social cooperation at all levels from all of your neighbors.

Or.... you can continue doing precisely what you have been doing, and be constantly on a war footing.

China warns Federal Reserve over 'printing money'

Richard Fisher, president of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, said: "Senior officials of the Chinese government grilled me about whether or not we are going to monetise the actions of our legislature."

His recent trip to the Far East appears to have been a stark reminder that Asia's "Confucian" culture of right action does not look kindly on the insouciant policy of printing money by Anglo-Saxons.

Iran's Ahmadinejad rejects Western nuclear proposal

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday rejected a Western proposal for it to "freeze" its nuclear work in return for no new sanctions and ruled out any talks with major powers on the issue.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Iraq has shown the world that it does not matter what you agree to do with the USreal; the war will be on anyway and even if Iran froze its nuclear power station, the same media that has transformed that power station into a weapons lab in the public eye will simply claim that Iran continues the weapons work anyway.

Ahmadinejad understands that caving into the US will accomplish nothing except waste the investment in the power station. The war is on anyway.

Iran has a legal right to build that power station, and the US is acting illegally in trying to deprive Iran of its legal rights under the NNPT. Iran knows that, and more the the point, the rest of the world knows it.

Iran does not want a war, but it sees the US already at the bring of disaster with three ongoing wars and a crippled economy, and with Russia ready (indeed eager after Afghanistan) to logistically support Iran against the US, Iran knows that the outcome of this was may not be the foregone conclusion the US imagines.

The interest yield on 10-year US Treasuries – the benchmark price of long-term credit for the global system – jumped 33 basis points last week to 3.45pc week on contagion effects after Standard & Poor's issued a warning on Britain's "AAA" credit rating.

The Obama administration needs to raise $2 trillion this year to cover the fiscal stimulus plan and the bank bail-outs. It has to fund $900bn by September.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US economic situation is about to get infintely more ugly than it already is.

U.S. appeals to China to help stabilize Pakistan

The Obama administration has appealed to China to provide training and even military equipment to help Pakistan counter a growing militant threat, U.S. officials said.

The proposal is part of a broad push by Washington to enlist key allies of Pakistan in the effort to stabilize the country. The U.S. is seeking to persuade Islamabad to step up its efforts against militants, while supporting the fragile civilian government and the nation's tottering economy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

CHINA?!?!?!

Chinese officials are no fools: they know what the US is trying to do here, they know the geopolitical outcome the US wants to achieve, and they are absolutely right not to want any part of it, for many reasons.

Bush's Shocking Biblical Prophecy Emerges: God Wants to "Erase" Mid-East Enemies "Before a New Age Begins"

The story has now been confirmed by Chirac himself in a new book, published in France in March, by journalist Jean Claude Maurice. Chirac is said to have been stupefied and disturbed by Bush's invocation of Biblical prophesy to justify the war in Iraq and "wondered how someone could be so superficial and fanatical in their beliefs".

In the same year he spoke to Chirac, Bush had reportedly said to the Palestinian foreign minister that he was on "a mission from God" in launching the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan and was receiving commands from the Lord.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Time to face facts, people; all those family members you mourn and remember today died because Bush was hearing voices in his head!

Israel's Barak to US next week for Iran talks

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak will fly to Washington next week for talks with his counterpart Robert Gates and senior officials set to focus on Iran's nuclear ambitions, an official said.

The defence minister was also planning to meet Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Obama's National Security Adviser James Jones and special Middle East envoy George Mitchell, the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is just to calibrate the fine points of a US-led military offensive against Iran; nothing more, nothing less.

Were I a betting person, I would bet that such an attack may well happen before the end of this year.

But what will be very interesting, after his conferences here, will see if Ehud Barak will be going to Russia next, because that is the great unknown in terms of how they would respond to such an attack against Iran.

Russia cannot be seen to just let its 7th largest trading partner go down to an Israeli/US invasion without a really good reason; Barak knows that he will have to give it to them, to prevent them from going to war on Iran's behalf.

In the latest phase of the nation’s real estate disaster, the locus of trouble has shifted from subprime loans — those extended to home buyers with troubled credit — to the far more numerous prime loans issued to those with decent financial histories.

Special Tribunal Spokeswoman, Hezbollah Dismiss Spiegel’s Allegations

Hezbollah media relations’ bureau issued a statement on Sunday in which it dismissed allegations published by the German magazine Der Spiegel and broadcast by Al-Arabiyya Channel saying that it is nothing less than “police fabrications”.

Der Spiegel claimed on Saturday that the UN special Tribunal for Lebanon probing the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005, had new evidence that Hezbollah special forces "planned and executed" the Beirut car bombing that killed the former premier and 22 others.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Originally, Syria was blamed for Hariri's death, which led to Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon ... whereupon Israel attacked Lebanon in an attempt to gain access to the Litani river whose water Israel covets.

But Hezbollah, even without Syrian assistance, stopped Israel and the consensus is that Israel lost the 2006 invasion.

So it comes as no surprise that the frame up for Hariri's assassination (thought to have actually been carried out by Israel) shifts to Hezbollah, as Israel needs to find a way to get them out of the way before the next attempt to steal the Litani River.

FOR MEMORIAL DAY - MAJESTIC MEMORIES

Looking back on that time, while the US Government declared political victory in the war, and the "Captains of Industry" grew rich turning looted war material into corporations that could hardly fail in competing with nations whose industrial bases had been bombed into rubble, I recognize that the town I grew up in had been defeated in that war. It had been eviscerated. It had had its very heart cut out of it; a gaping hole that never healed, but could only be forgotten.

MEMORIAL DAY - WALTER LEWIS SMITH

So, here is one veteran; not a glyph on a wall, but a man with a name, a face, and a history. To his friends and family he was a real human being, even though to the War Department he was just another statistic.

But as I think back on him, I know for a fact that he and the millions of others who served in all the various wars the United States became entangled in would be shocked and saddened to see that the government for which they sacrificed so much has become the very embodiment of all that they fought so hard against. No more First Amendment, warrantless spying on Americans, show trials, confessions extracted by torture; for this Walter gave up a lung?

Thai Govt Closes Dozens of Websites After Boy Commits Suicide Over Game Ban

Following the suicide of a 12-year-old boy on Thursday, Thailand's Criminal Court has ordered the closure of 72 websites.

The Bangkok Post reports that Pongsathorn Wattanabenjasopha leaped to his death from the sixth floor of his school building, after being banned from playing video games by his father.

Oddly enough, the 72 sites shuttered by the Thai government include both online game and gambling venues. The Post reports comments by a government official who said that game-addicted children were more likely to commit suicide.

Memorial Day - Map the Fallen in Google Earth

This is one of the most powerful poignant ways I´ve seen yet of showing who died where and when and where they lived.

This Memorial Day I would like to share with you a personal project of mine that uses Google Earth to honor the more than 5,700 American and Coalition servicemen and women that have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have created a map for Google Earth that will connect you with each of their stories—you can see photos, learn about how they died, visit memorial websites with comments from friends and families, and explore the places they called home and where they died.

US must rein in Israel's nuclear arms

The surprise announcement by Rose Gottemoeller, a US assistant secretary of state, that America would like every nation – including Israel – to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) has sent shockwaves through Tel Aviv, confirming the fears (or hopes, depending on who you ask) that the Obama administration is initiating a major overhaul of its policy on nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

The Israeli government will certainly challenge the Obama administration on this issue, as Israel is not likely to co-operate, to put it mildly, with the state department's new logical, fair-minded approach to non-proliferation.

NHS 'loses' thousands of medical records

The personal medical records of tens of thousands of people have been lost by the NHS in a series of grave data security leaks. Between January and April this year, 140 security breaches were reported within the NHS – more than the total number from inside central Government and all local authorities combined.

The sacred principle of doctor-patient confidentiality is being compromised, Richard Thomas, the Information Commissioner, has warned. Britain's information watchdog has ordered an urgent overhaul of data security in the health service.

Some computers containing medical records have been left by skips and stolen. Others were left on encrypted discs – but the passwords allowing access were taped to the side.

Egyption Collaboration With Israel Is Strangling Gaza

he Egyptian Authorities blocked on Sunday the European Hope Convoy, filled with medical aid, from crossing into the Gaza Strip despite all preparations and calls on Egypt to facilitate the entry of the convoy into the besieged and impoverished coastal region.

The Egyptian authorities only allowed some members of the convoy and some said to cross into Gaza , but the European Campaign to End the Siege said that is insufficient and would not enable Gaza hospitals to treat the patients, especially those injured during the three-week Israel offensive earlier this year.

Nearly 160 peace activists and workers of non-governmental organizations from different European countries were about to enter Gaza after the Egyptian authorities stamped their passports, but then were not allowed through.

They May Not Want The Bomb

Everything you know about Iran is wrong, or at least more complicated than you think. Take the bomb. The regime wants to be a nuclear power but could well be happy with a peaceful civilian program (which could make the challenge it poses more complex). What's the evidence? Well, over the last five years, senior Iranian officials at every level have repeatedly asserted that they do not intend to build nuclear weapons. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has quoted the regime's founding father, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who asserted that such weapons were "un-Islamic." The country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a fatwa in 2004 describing the use of nuclear weapons as immoral.

Undead deleted photos linger on social networking websites

That embarrassing party shot of you and that hot dog may still come back to haunt you - photos posted on social networking websites can often be easily viewed even after users attempt to delete them, according to a study by security researchers at the University of Cambridge.

Researchers posted photos on 16 social networking and Web 2.0 websites, keeping a careful record of the URL associated with the photos, before deleting the images. Even after this supposed deletion the researchers were able to find the photos on seven of the 16 websites a month later, simply by visiting the web location associated with the image.

The problem arises because sites often fail to remove image files from their photo servers after they are deleted from the main website.

Satellite Navigation systems could be in danger of breaking down within the next year, according to the US government.

Rethinking the costs of peace

Josh Ruebner calls on US President Barack Obama to make US military aid to Israel consistent with the Arms Export Control Act, which limits the use of weapons given to foreign countries to “internal security” and “legitimate self-defence”, not the killing of innocent civilians and illegal occupation, as Israel is doing.

“The provision of US weapons to Israel at taxpayer expense has done nothing to bring Israelis and Palestinians closer to achieving a just and lasting peace. Rather, these weapons have had the exact opposite effect, as documented recently by Amnesty International, which pointed to US weapons as a prime factor “fueling” the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

Security turnaround in Afghanistan in 18 months a must: Mullen

Admiral Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the military solution was not enough but the buildup in US forces would be used to turn around the security situation.

President Barack Obama has approved deployments that would double the size of the US force in Afghanistan to 68,000 by the fall.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Admiral Mullen: the old Soviet Union couldn't do this with 500,000 pairs of boots on the ground, and by fall, we'll have a total complement of (drum roll, please) ......68,000 troops with which to accomplish security improvement?

I am willing to bet one whole cent that we will see a draft be reinstituted by the end of Obama's first term.

The very muscular foreign policy goals he's put forward cannot be brought about without a return to conscription, particularly now that he's potentially looking at military involvement against Pakistan and Iraq.

Who is an anti-Semite?

Someday the word “anti-Semite” will be studied as an example of distorted political discourse — as a signifier attached to somebody who advocates the reign of demonology. How does one dare critically talk about the extraordinary influence the Jews in the West without running the risk of social opprobrium?

We certainly cannot expect that Jewish intellectuals will think critically about Jewish influence. As a French author Hervé Ryssen writes, “internationally-known Jewish authors, haunted by the either real or surreal specter of anti-Semitism, consider it a sickness, which enables them to avoid any form of introspection.”

Meeting Force with Force

”A little rebellion now and then is a good thing.” – Thomas Jefferson

I strictly believe people have a right to not only rebel against their government, but also to use violence against their government when it is absolutely necessary. However, people should not initiate force against their government as a primary movement, instead people should work at asserting their rights first and foremost with nonviolence. If nonviolent movements fail then they should be more than welcomed to defend their lives and liberties physically.

Every freedom that we have, all natural freedoms we possess by right of being human mean nothing if we are not permitted to defend them when they are under attack.
Currently every American is under attack, and has been for the passed 9 years.

The Weimar Hyperinflation: Time to get out the wheelbarrows?

What actually drove the wartime inflation into hyperinflation, said Schacht, was speculation by foreign investors, who would bet on the mark's decreasing value by selling it short.

Short selling of the German mark was made possible because PRIVATE banks made massive amounts of currency available for borrowing, marks that were created on demand and lent to investors, returning a profitable interest to the banks.

At first, the speculation was fed by the Reichsbank (the German central bank), which had recently been PRIVATIZED. But when the Reichsbank could no longer keep up with the voracious demand for marks, other PRIVATE BANKS WERE ALLOWED TO CREATE THEM [MARKS] OUT OF NOTHING AND LEND THEM AT INTEREST.

World renowned, award winning journalist John Pilger commented on George Galloway’s autobiography: “Galloway’s work has saved countless lives, particularly in Iraq”. This is an accurate statement about the record of the five-times elected British MP who was described by Canadian Minister for Immigration Jason Kenny as “a threat to Canada’s security” and subsequently banned from entering Canada during March of this year. Juxtaposing the blood-soaked records of George W Bush and Bill Clinton - especially in relation to Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, Somalia and elsewhere - with the unimpeachable record of George Galloway MP, the patent rudderless and deceptive nature of the current Canadian government and its media accomplices becomes transparent.

FLASHBACK - A moment of reflection

That we have been attacked is certain. But before we send out the cruise missiles to prove how big our national dick is, we had better make sure we are aimed at the right party, and not just being suckered into bombing someone that the real planners and perpetrators of the World Trade Center attack want to trick us into bombing. Because if, in the heat of the moment and the lust for vengeance we surrender our basic American principles such as demand for proof beyond a reasonable doubt, then we ourselves will have damaged America and what it stands for far more than those who attacked the World Trade Center could ever do themselves. What the hijackers could not knock down, we will have thrown down ourselves.

Now at last it's time for Shell to atone for my father's death

Ken Saro-Wiwa's real "crime" was his audacity to sensitise local and global public opinion to the ecological and human rights abuses perpetrated by Shell and a ruthless military dictatorship against the Ogoni people. The success of his campaign had mobilised our community to say "No to Shell" and to demand compensation for years of oil spills that had polluted our farms, streams and water sources. My father called the world's attention to the gas flares that had been pumping toxic fumes into the Earth's atmosphere for up to 24 hours a day since oil was discovered on our lands in 1958.
