Israel hits Lebanon with rocket fire

Israel has reportedly fired at least seventeen rockets into southern Lebanon within minutes after being hit by rockets from the country.

"Between one and three rockets were launched from an area four kilometers west of the village of Shebaa and Israel responded within a minute with four rockets that landed north of Ghajar," AFP quoted a Lebanese security official as saying.

Lebanon's LBC TV confirmed the firing of two rockets from Hassbia in southern Lebanon into the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmouna, saying Israel is responding with continuous rocket fire.

Israeli jets violated Lebanese airspace following the incident.

Hezbollah and Palestinian factions have ruled out any involvement in the rocket firing and there is speculation that people angry over the Israeli war on Gaza have launched the attacks.

More Expert Economic Backpeddlers Whistling in the Dark

U.S. Retail Sales Decline for a Record Sixth Month

Bob Willis | Bloomberg | Jan 14, 2008

Sales at U.S. retailers fell more than twice as much as forecast in December as job losses and the choking-off of credit led Americans to cut back on everything from eating out to car purchases.

“Consumers are pulling back,” Michael Gregory, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto, said before the report. “The first half is going to be bleak in terms of consumer spending and economic activity.”

The loss of 2.6 million jobs and declining home and stock values are squeezing all American households, hurting retailers from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to Macy’s Inc. The figures will serve as a reminder to lawmakers of the urgency to enact President- elect Barack Obama’s stimulus proposals to combat the recession.

Hillary Clinton promises new approach to diplomacy

Los Angeles Times Politics | Paul Richter | Jan 14, 2009

Clinton spoke easily about a range of problems worldwide, addressing the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip for the first time. She acknowledged that problems in the Middle East might seem intractable, but said, "We cannot give up on peace."

Clinton echoed the Bush administration stand in part by declaring: "You cannot negotiate with Hamas until it renounces violence, recognizes Israel and agrees to abide by past agreements. That is just for me an absolute. That is the United States government's position; that is the president-elect's position."

Clinton offered no specifics on how she will try to end the fighting between Israel and Hamas, a task she will confront as soon as she takes office.

The Humiliation Of America

Yet in his farewell press conference on January 12, Bush said that the world respects America for its compassion.

The compassion of bombing a UN school for girls?

The compassion of herding 100 Palestinians into one house and then shelling it?

The compassion of bombing hospitals and mosques?

The compassion of depriving 1.5 million Palestinians of food, medicine, and energy?

The compassion of violently overthrowing the democratically elected Hamas government?

The compassion of blowing up the infrastructure of one of the poorest and most deprived people on earth?

The compassion of abstaining from a Security Council vote condemning these actions?

And this is a repeat of what the Israelis and Americans did to Lebanon in 2006, what the Americans did to Iraqis for six years and are continuing to do to Afghans after seven years. And still hope to do to the Iranians and Syrians.

Depression 2009 The Largest Train Wreck in Economic History

Stage 1: Financial collapse. Faith in "business as usual" is lost. The future is no longer assumed to resemble the past in any way that allows risk to be assessed and financial assets to be guaranteed. Financial institutions become insolvent; savings are wiped out, and access to capital is lost.

Stage 2: Commercial collapse. Faith that "the market shall provide" is lost. Money is devalued and/or becomes scarce, commodities are hoarded, import and retail chains break down, and widespread shortages of survival necessities become the norm…

Stage 1 in Orlov's scenario is well underway. The vast majority of investment and commercial banks are now insolvent, propped up and still in business only because of recently granted government guarantees designed to prevent workers from realizing their life savings are in imminent danger.

Kucinich offers Resolution for Cease-Fire in Gaza, unimpeded aid to Gaza

I know, I know, our entire Congress is blackmailed and/or bribed and the idea that they will do anything against Israel's demands or outside of AIPAC's direction is willfully ignorant wishful thinking but I thought I would post this anyway...

Please take action to get support for this important resolution to soon be formally introduced by Dennis Kucinich. It comes after last weeks disgusting House/Senate vote to unconditionally support Israeli aggression in Gaza that now has killed nearly a thousand people, mostly unarmed people, including hundreds of children. The death toll, staggering as it may be, really says little of the suffering of the 1.4 million people of Gaza.

It is in the best interest of the people of the United States, of Palestinians, of Israelis, of the world, for the United States to do all it can to press for a cease-fire, for aid to the people of Gaza.

This resolution, to be offered by Dennis Kucinich, is not yet numbered.

Why Arab dictators will not help GAZA

The Sources of Arabs’ Shame: Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia
by Dr. Abbas Bakhtiar / January 10th, 2009

"The Arab Collaborators
The often asked question, when it comes to the Palestinians, is about the role of Arab countries in the Palestinian struggle for freedom. The people not familiar with the political landscape of the area often see the Middle East as two camps, Arab countries on one side and Israel on the other. The reality is totally different. Israel has seldom been alone. Beside its usual American, French, British and other staunch allies, she has had the hidden backing of several Arab countries."

Bernanke wants to impoverish all Americans, Give banks more trillions to enslave us all

Economic rescue package may not be enough, Bernanke tells Obama

guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 13 January 2009 | Heather Stewart

Ben Bernanke, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, has warned Barack Obama to be ready to take fresh action to bail out America's banks if the world economy is to recover.

With the price of many assets still plunging, he said the $250bn programme for recapitalising America's banks might not be enough, and "more capital injections and guarantees may become necessary to ensure stability and the normalisation of credit markets".

U.S. Trade Gap Narrows to 5-Year Low on Import Slump

Jan. 13 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. trade deficit 29 percent in November, the most in 12 years, as tumbling oil prices and a slump in consumer spending slashed imports.

The gap shrank more than forecast to $40.4 billion, the smallest since November 2003, from a revised $56.7 billion in October, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. Americans bought 12 percent fewer goods and services from overseas, sending imports to the lowest level in three years.

Demands grow for Gaza war crimes investigation

Israel is facing growing demands from senior UN officials and human rights groups for an international war crimes investigation in Gaza over allegations such as the "reckless and indiscriminate" shelling of residential areas and use of Palestinian families as human shields by soldiers.

With the death toll from the 17-day Israeli assault on Gaza climbing above 900, pressure is increasing for an independent inquiry into specific incidents, such as the shelling of a UN school turned refugee centre where about 40 people died, as well as the question of whether the military tactics used by Israel systematically breached humanitarian law.

Wall Street caused oil price spike - 60 Minutes

Here is an interesting video news story from 60 Minutes that aired Jan. 12th 2009. It is being claimed that investment bankers speculating in the commodities markets were dramatically affecting the prices of crude oil and that the resulting price at the pump was due to the speculation and not supply and demand. In the end of the video it is stated that "regulatory lapses in the commodities markets that many believe fomented the rapid speculation in oil has still not been addressed although the incoming Obama administration has promised to do so." One has to wonder what kind of regulation on commodities will be coming and who will be doing the regulating. This appears to be another problem - reaction - solution scenario unfolding with the Federal Reserve grabbing more power.

Our Collapsing Economy

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarm payroll employment declined by 3,445,000 from December 2007 through December 2008.

The collapse in employment is across the board.

Construction lost 520,000 jobs. Manufacturing lost 806,000 jobs. Trade, transportation and utilities lost 1,495,000 jobs (retail trade accounted for 1,120,000 of this loss). Financial activities lost 145,000 jobs. Professional and business services lost 713,000 jobs. Even government lost 188,000 jobs.

Only in health care and social assistance has the economy been able to eke out a few new jobs.

Many analysts believe the job losses will be as great or greater during 2009.

Gaza now Israeli weapons testing lab?

Israel has turned Gaza into a research laboratory to test out its new "extremely nasty" weapons on Palestinians, a medical expert says.

After working for 10 days at the Shifa Hospital in the war-torn Palestinian territory, Dr. Mads Gilbert, a member of a Norwegian triage medical team in Gaza, blasted Israel for conducting experimental military work in the impoverished strip.

"There's a very strong suspicion I think that Gaza is now being used as a test laboratory for new weapons," Gilbert told reporters at Oslo's Gardermoen airport upon his return home on Monday.

Dr. Gilbert said the kinds of injuries he and his colleague Erik Fosse had seen during their ten-day aid work in Gaza had proven that Dense Inert Metal Explosives (DIME) was being used in the embattled territory.

Let the military campaign stop, let the Israelis withdraw, and let the rights of our people be admitted to, let them recognize our rights to live without a siege and closed border crossings, just like other humans, then we are ready to discuss a truce, just like we did before.

We will not accept a permanent truce, because it will take the right of resistance from the Palestinian people. The resistance is against occupation and military campaigns and therefore as long as occupation exists, resistance will too...

We will also not accept the interference of international forces because international forces will come only to protect Israel's security and any international force imposed will be considered as occupiers.

According to the cabinet of the criminal Ehud Olmert, Ehud Barak, and the chief of the Israeli intelligence, Yuval Diskin, the military Operation “Cast Lead” must put an end to some political activists, Palestinian resistance and their families as the only solution to “decrease the terror” of revenge against Israel. By murdering their families, Israel will guarantee that no revenge would be possible in the future.

If President-elect Barack Obama is reassuring the intelligence community “that his complaints are with the Bush administration, not them,” as AP’s Pamela Hess reported January 10th, his campaign slogan “change we can believe in” is headed for an early grave.

Obama’s remarks are a literal signal to CIA officials and other unindicted war criminals that they will not be prosecuted no matter what vile and horrific tortures they inflicted. And that’s not change; that’s business as usual; that’s what the CIA has done for years and gotten away with every time. In a nostalgic farewell news conference, Bush recalled the start of his own presidency, called Obama "a smart, engaging person" and said he wishes his successor all the best.

The Target is Iran: Israel's Latest Gamble May Backfire

The aerial war against Gaza launched by Israel just after Christmas, and the ground offensive, with which it rang in the New Year, were shocking in their brutality, but should constitute no surprise, if viewed from the standpoint of long-term Israeli strategic aims. The Israelis have argued that the offensive was launched in response to eight years' of relentless attacks by Hamas rockets into Israel. But then, one asks: why now? Why should they wait eight years?

America’s Shame

Why does Israel have a right to exist, but Palestine doesn’t?

This is the question of our time.

For sixty years Israelis have been stealing Palestine from Palestinians. There are maps available on the Internet and in Israeli publications showing the shrinkage over time of what was once Palestine into what Palestine is today--a small number of unconnected ghettos or bantustans.

Palestine became “the occupied territory” from which Palestinians were ejected and Israeli settlements built for “settlers.” Jordan, Syria and Lebanon are full of refugee camps in which Palestinians driven off their lands by Israeli force have been living for decades.

Driving people off their land is strictly illegal under international law, but Israel has been getting away with it for decades.

Gaza is a concentration camp of 1.5 million Palestinians who were driven from their homes and villages and collected in the Gaza Ghetto.

"Four people survived the crash," he said, adding that two of the injured were in a critical state and two others were in satisfactory condition.

Kosopkin, President Dmitry Medvedev's representative in Russia's lower house of parliament, was among eight passengers and three crew on a Mi-8 helicopter owned by energy giant Gazprom that went missing two days ago. Send thanks to Jon Stewart for disecting and ridiculing the Zionist's anti-Palestinian propaganda

On The Daily Show's January 5 "Strip Maul" segment, Jon Stewart did what few American television personalities have dared to do: he criticized Israel's campaign against Gaza, making it clear that bombing will not bring peace for Israelis or Palestinians. He's sure to get thousands of complaints, so send Jon a letter of appreciation and then ask all your friends to watch this segment.

Please consider sending an email message of thanks to Jon for having the courage to bring to his audience's attention the fact that from the corporate media whores and most political commentators they have been fed a steady stream of one sided, pro-Israel spin and propaganda which does nothing to present a realistic view to the public of what is happening in Gaza today. Hamas is a child of Israel

The resolution contained numerous twists of history, but the most glaring absurdity is the following:

“Whereas Hamas was founded with the stated goal of destroying Israel…”

Perhaps the senators were in a rush to collect campaign contributions, so they did not have time to glance at the history of how Hamas arose to power.

Hamas was created with massive aid from the Israeli government.

Ukraine-Russia gas spat: some background and context

Ukraine-Russia gas spat: some background and context
As we enter yet another episode of worried or sanctimonious articles about the gas conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it's worth remembering a few simple facts:

1) The conflict started in 1992, not in 2006;

2) Russia cannot win a gas war against Ukraine and knows it;

3) the real underlying stakes are not about Russia or Ukraine.

Five Somali pirates drown as they squabble over their $3million ransom

Five Somali pirates drowned when a wave washed off their getaway boat as they squabbled over over how to split their $3 million ransom.

The ransom had been paid to the pirates to end the world's biggest ship hijacking.

The canister full of cash was parachuted onto the Sirius Star - observed by the U.S. Navy who provided these images - and the two-month ordeal of the 25 crew, including two Britons, was finally over.

Glenn Greenwald: Both parties cheerlead still more loudly for Israel's war

The Israelis have deliberately made it impossible to know the full extent of the carnage and humanitarian disasters because they continue to prevent journalists from entering Gaza even in the face of a now week-old Israeli Supreme Court order compelling them to do so. According to Palestinian sources, there are now 700 dead Palestinians -- at least 200 of them children -- and well over 1,000 wounded. Those numbers are not seriously doubted by anyone. By comparison, a total of 10 Israelis have died -- 10 -- almost all of them by "friendly fire." The unusually worded Red Cross condemnation of Israel was prompted by its discovery, after finally being allowed into Gaza, of starving Palestinian children laying next to corpses, with ambulances blocked for days by the IDF. Even with the relative "restraint" Israel is excercising (the damage it could cause is obviously much greater), this is not so much of a war as it is a completely one-sided massacre.

Is Israel winning the 'media war' over Gaza?

"We are all Hamas,” screamed a scrawny Mauritanian, repeatedly, as he determinedly drew his face closer to a TV camera. Behind him, thousands more tunefully chanted similar words, chants that were heard in different Arabic dialects, in fact in many different languages all across the globe. Yet, Israel, somehow is claiming victory in the media war, which it calculatedly unleashed weeks before its most violent attack on Gaza yet. Thousands have been reportedly killed and wounded in little more than a week, starting Dec. 27, in the tiny stretch of land (roughly 140 square miles), yet densely populated Gaza Strip of 1.5 million people.

Why Do So Few Speak Up for Gaza?

The basic argument is that Palestinian terrorists represented by Hamas are given to an irrational hatred of Jews so profound that it invalidates their movement, even when they win elections. That was not the view of the Israeli security service when it earlier supported Hamas as the alternative to the then dreaded PLO. Also, history is replete with examples of terrorists becoming statesmen, even within the early ranks of Jews fighting to establish the state of Israel.

Fake Truth - For Our Own Good?

"For the real environment is altogether too big, too complex, and too fleeting for direct acquaintance. ...we have to reconstruct it on a simpler model before we can manage with it." Essentially, in my view, Lippmann described the dumbing down, repackaging, and presentation of a reality by an elite group to the masses.

Dinner Honoring McCain to Be Hosted by Obama

Saturday, January 10, 2009; 2:30 PM

President-elect Barack Obama will host a dinner honoring Sen. John McCain, the Republican he tromped in the election, the night before his inauguration, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced yesterday, saying the gesture demonstrates Obama's "commitment to bridging the bipartisan divide."

The dinner will be one of a series that night: Gen. Colin Powell and Vice President-elect Joe Biden also will be feted.

"In these times of great challenge and great change, leadership requires rising above the same old narrow partisanship," Obama said on the PIC Web site. "Each of these distinguished Americans has spent his life in service to his country, at each and every moment placing the interests of America before issues of political party."

Inside The Oakland Riot: A First-Hand Account
Eye On Blogs: Post Your Comments, Reactions To Joe's Riot Account

You've heard of a mob mentality. Well, I've just seen it in action.
Wednesday night's riot in Oakland developed quickly like a spark into a wildfire, and I was right in the middle of it.
It started with a peaceful demonstration at the Fruitvale BART station. Hundreds of demonstrators carried signs, shouted into megaphones and voiced their opinions.
Suddenly, a large segment of the crowd started walking off.

"Suddenly, a protester pointed at a police car. Someone started cursing at the officers who were standing behind it. The crowd surged. They rolled up a dumpster and set it on fire. It escalated. Someone else threw rocks; breaking the windshield. Traffic piled up and officers started shouting to the drivers, "Roll up your windows!"

The Fed's Bubble Trouble - Peter Schiff

A few weeks ago when the Fed announced a strategy designed to bring down long-term interest and home mortgage rates through unlimited Treasury bond purchases, government debt staged a spectacular rally. To the unschooled market observer, the spike may be difficult to understand. After all, why would the value of Treasury bonds rise while their underlying credit quality is deteriorating faster than Bernie Madoff's social schedule? The move is actually a perfect illustration of the tried and true Wall Street strategy of "buy the rumor and sell the fact".
