NASA's Mars helicopter Ingenuity will head to new airfield today on 5th flight

NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter is about to explore a new patch of the Red Planet.

Ingenuity is scheduled to make its fifth Martian flight today (May 7), a jaunt that will be unlike anything the 4-lb. (1.8 kilograms) chopper has attempted so far.

If all goes according to plan, Ingenuity will lift off at 3:26 p.m. EDT (1926 GMT), climb to an altitude of 16 feet (5 meters) and then head south for 423 feet (129 m), following the same path it took a week ago on the 87-second flight number four. We won't know how things went for a while, though; data from Ingenuity isn't expected to start coming down to Earth until around 7:30 p.m. EDT (2330 GMT).

China sprayed space with 3,000 pieces of junk. US military officials want rules to stop that sort of thing

Tired of space junk and weapons, US military commanders presented to Congress on Wednesday an argument to create a framework for rules-based order in space.

One reason for their call was that in January 2007 China demonstrated its ability to destroy a satellite in space when it shot a ballistic missile at one of its own inactive weather satellites.

According to US Space Force Lieutenant General Stephen Whiting, at a House Foreign Affairs and House Armed Services joint subcommittee hearing, the resulting spray of junk comprised 3,000 trackable objects, 10 per cent of all space debris the US tracks. He sternly referred to China's test as "very irresponsible."

Qualcomm vulnerability impacts nearly 40% of all mobile phones

A high severity security vulnerability found in Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chips (including the latest 5G-capable versions) could enable attackers to access mobile phone users' text messages, call history, and listen in on their conversations.

Qualcomm MSM is a series of 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G capable system on chips (SoCs) used in roughly 40% of mobile phones by multiple vendors, including Samsung, Google, LG, OnePlus, and Xiaomi.

"If exploited, the vulnerability would have allowed an attacker to use Android OS itself as an entry point to inject malicious and invisible code into phones," according to Check Point researchers who found the vulnerability tracked as CVE-2020-11292.

The security flaw could also enable attackers to unlock the subscriber identification module (SIM) used by mobile devices to store network authentication info and contact information securely.

The genocidal maniac in question would be China’s Chairman Mao.

There's a truck driver shortage, so one Texas company is offering experienced drivers $14K a week

Imagine making $14,000 a week. That's what one Texas-based company is offering because of a nationwide truck driving shortage.

When the pandemic hit many truckers left the industry because there wasn't as much product to haul and the rates to transport products like gasoline tumbled. Now that demand is back up, but with fewer truckers to haul products like gasoline, a massive shortage is looming.

"And it's not just going to be gasoline. It's not going just going to be wood. You're talking about all your retail goods just like clothing, food, toilet paper, you name it," said Jim Grundy who is the CEO and owner of Sisu Energy.

He says the shortages aren't going to only take place this summer, but well beyond that.

"That's the narrative that you're hearing," he said. "That this thing is going to last anywhere from two to four years. And it could be longer because the population's getting stronger."

End The Campaign of Fear

We’ve all seen the panic-inducing posters and videos, such as: “Look them in the eyes and tell them you’re doing all you can to stop Covid-19.” They form part of a campaign on which the Government has spent hundreds of millions of our money, making it the UK’s No.1 advertiser in 2020.

Broadcasters justify a daily diet of terrifying sensationalised and misleading stories with reference to emergency Ofcom rules, introduced at the Government’s behest, which ban any story that might undermine compliance with the rules. Posters at every supermarket and railway station use imagery and language designed with one aim in mind: to ensure obedience through fear.

There has been a sustained drive to induce mass panic and phobia of disease. And it has succeeded. Millions of people in the UK are now incapable of thinking rationally about Covid-19. Polling indicates that the average person believes it is at least 100 times more deadly than it actually is.

Texas Shuts The Door On Woke Education

Republican lawmakers in Texas are reportedly moving forward with the effort to prohibit teaching of “woke philosophies” such as critical race theory in favor of “traditional history” being taught in schools. They are seeking to limit how and what public school students are taught about race.

Mirroring moves by other red-state legislatures across the country, Texas Republicans are attempting to reach into classrooms and limit what public school students are taught about the nation's historical subjugation of people of color.

Two separate pieces of legislation, Senate bill 2022 and House bill 3979, finding their way through the legislature would ban teachers from teaching anti-racist material, and from receiving private funding or material for teaching the controversial 1619 Project.

Women Explain Why They Aren’t Having Babies In Response To Declining Birth Rate Reports

A recent report that the birth rate has continued to decline in the United States has prompted some strong responses.

Centers for Disease Control data released on Wednesday shows 2020 births have declined for the sixth year in a row, despite many expecting a sort of baby boom to start nine months after many Americans began spending more time at home thanks to the pandemic.

A New York Times article on the subject offers up a number of possible reasons—better access to birth control, economic uncertainty, women simply choosing to have kids at a later age—but most coverage of the report seems to paint the decline as largely negative.

A headline for The Washington Post jumps right to “how other countries have tried to persuade people to have more children.” The Associated Press seems to blame pandemic anxiety. NPR stresses how there aren’t enough babies being born “for a generation to exactly replace itself.”

Police Agencies Use Cars as Backdoors to Break Into Phones

Law enforcement has been struggling for years to find a way to unlock mobile devices used by suspects believed to be involved in criminal activities, with several officials, including FBI representatives, repeatedly calling for tech giants to step in and help break into password-protected devices.
The most famous case is the iPhone of the San Bernardino attacker, with the FBI publicly requesting Apple to unlock the device and help the investigators get past the passcode screen.

Apple refused to do so on national security claims, explaining that building such a backdoor would eventually compromise all of its devices, as the company said it would have been only a matter of time until such a solution landed in the wrong hands.

Since then, the police have been looking into all kinds of ways to access private data, and according to a report from The Intercept, the Customs and Border Protection officers have discovered one easy method to do the whole thing.

Google To Suddenly Flip The Security Switch On Millions Of Gmail Accounts

While the annual World Password Day event is quickly forgotten (it was May 6 if you missed it), it had one memorable moment courtesy of a seemingly unassuming Google blog post. Mark Risher, Google’s director of product management, identity and user security, wrote about password management. However, he also revealed a move that will suddenly make millions of Gmail accounts way more secur

This is where Google has stepped up to the plate this year and announced that it would “start automatically enrolling users in 2SV” or two-step verification which, in the cause of simplicity, can be thought of as the same thing as 2FA here. Although some of the 1.5 billion Gmail users will already have enabled 2FA, Google will make it the default for millions more.

Meet your automated, totalitarian medical police state future: Johns Hopkins demands AI robots and drones enforce covid vaccine war against humanity

Imagine a fleet of CDC drones hovering near your home, sniffing the air for “covid particles” by using on-board PCR testing equipment. Using a CT setting of 45, the drones report that your front porch “tests positive” for covid, yet there’s no record that you have a vaccine passport at your reported address, recorded in a government database. Within seconds, an AI-powered cyborg humanoid robot arrives at your address in a driverless vehicle. It walks to your front door, knocks aggressively and announces in a robotic voice, “This is the CDC rapid response team. Have you been vaccinated?”

This is the future envisioned by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, as described in a new report entitled, “Technologies to Address Global Catastrophic Biological Risks.”

Conservatives Won't Say It: the Problem Is ‘Systemic Anti-Whiteness,’ Not Marxism, Not ID Politics

Institutionalized, systemic anti-whiteness, yoked to white hot, hatred of whites:

That is the creed that is fast becoming entrenched across state and civil society in the U.S.

Chiseled down, these are also the building blocks of Critical Race Theory, a specious, subintelligent concoction, originated by subpar intellectuals.

The Critical Race project now pervades private and political life.

A further twist of the screw (or the shrew) was delivered recently by Vice President Kamala Harris, who insists on yammering about white America’s historic racism.

In practice, whites are being singled out for a punishing, institutionalized program of reeducation, subjugation and continued intimidation.

Dangerous in isolation, the entrenchment of anti-white animus is indisputable. It is made worse in combination with the conservative cognoscenti’s inability to come out with it. Too many conservatives euphemize our anti-white culture.

Study: AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine blood clot disorder far more common than reported

A new study that systematically monitored rates of vascular and thromboembolic events in people receiving the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine has found it to be associated with a rate of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) of 1 in 40,000.

Using national health records, the researchers identified rates of arterial and venous events in a cohort of 282,572 people aged 18-65 years within 28 days of receiving a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in Denmark and Norway from February 2021 through to March 11, 2021 and compared these with expected rates in the general population of the same age and sex.

Results showed seven cases of CVST in the vaccinated cohort.

"If we monitored this number of people in this age range over 28 days, we would expect to see 0.3 cases of CVST. We found a rate 20 times higher than that, which translates to 1 excess case in every 40,000 people vaccinated."

The origin of COVID: Did people or nature open Pandora’s box at Wuhan?

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted lives the world over for more than a year. Its death toll will soon reach three million people. Yet the origin of pandemic remains uncertain: The political agendas of governments and scientists have generated thick clouds of obfuscation, which the mainstream press seems helpless to dispel.

In what follows I will sort through the available scientific facts, which hold many clues as to what happened, and provide readers with the evidence to make their own judgments. I will then try to assess the complex issue of blame, which starts with, but extends far beyond, the government of China.

By the end of this article, you may have learned a lot about the molecular biology of viruses. I will try to keep this process as painless as possible. But the science cannot be avoided because for now, and probably for a long time hence, it offers the only sure thread through the maze.

Almost Half of ‘Female’ Transgender Inmates Are Sex Offenders: Report

Government plans to let people “self-identify” as the opposite sex will put female prisoners at risk, campaigners have warned, after it was revealed that a huge proportion of transgender inmates are sex offenders.

A report by feminist charity Fair Play for Women found “at least 41 per cent” of transgender inmates housed in jails across England and Wales are sex offenders — compared to 17 per cent of the population as a whole — and that a further handful are held in maximum-security category A prisons.

According to Ministry of Justice figures, there are 70 transgender inmates in English and Welsh jails, but officials refused to answer freedom of information requests on the number of sex offenders amongst them, alleging that there is no “business or legal case” for recording the data.

U.S. Justice Department worried about Arizona vote recount

The U.S. Department of Justice expressed concern Wednesday about ballot security and potential voter intimidation arising from the Republican-controlled Arizona Senate’s unprecedented private recount of the 2020 presidential election results in Maricopa County.

In a letter to GOP Senate President Karen Fann, the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said the Senate’s farming out of 2.1 million ballots from the state’s most populous county to a contractor may run afoul of federal law requiring ballots to remain in the control of elections officials for 22 months.

Florida's new voting law immediately hit with lawsuits

Voting rights groups on Thursday filed a pair of lawsuits targeting a restrictive GOP-crafted voting bill, just moments after it was signed into law by Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The complaints, both filed in federal court in Tallahassee, claim the law, SB 90, illegally restricts access to the ballot box, with one of the suits alleging the measure will result in illegal discrimination against voters of color.

“SB 90 is a bill that purports to solve problems that do not exist," reads one of the suits. "[It] caters to a dangerous lie about the 2020 election that threatens our most basic democratic values, and, in the end, makes it harder to vote without adequate justification for doing so.”

The legal challenges come after Florida Republicans passed the measure on near party-line votes over objections from civil rights groups and every one of the state’s 67 county-level election supervisors.

On Wednesday, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced the LCRT is receiving $500,000 in Phase II funding through NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts program. While the LCRT isn't an official NASA mission yet, the funding round is a vote of confidence in the idea.

Volcanoes on Mars could be active, raising possibility of recent habitable conditions

Evidence of recent volcanic activity on Mars shows that eruptions could have taken place within the past 50,000 years, a paper by Planetary Science Institute Research Scientist David Horvath says.

Most volcanism on the Red Planet occurred between 3 and 4 billion years ago, with smaller eruptions in isolated locales continuing perhaps as recently as 3 million years ago. But, until now, there was no evidence to indicate whether Mars could still be volcanically active.

Using data from satellites orbiting Mars, the research team found evidence of an eruption in a region called Elysium Planitia that would be the youngest known volcanic eruption on Mars, said Horvath, lead author on "Evidence for geologically recent explosive volcanism in Elysium Planitia, Mars," which appears in Icarus.

Apple just issued this urgent warning to iPhone users and you need to read it

When Apple typically issues mid-cycle iOS updates, I don’t always update my iPhone immediately. Especially if the new update doesn’t address any serious security issues or have any compelling new features, I’ve never been in a rush to update my phone if things are already running smoothly. The recent release of iOS 14.5.1, however, is an exception and an update you’ll probably want to download as soon as possible.

Apple first released iOS 14.5 just about a week ago with a host of new features, including the company’s new App Tracking Transparency framework, new Siri voices, a multitude of new emojis, support for AirTags, and more. Just a few days later, Apple rolled out an iOS 14.5.1 update that it said addressed a bug associated with its App Tracking Transparency feature. An Apple support document, however, reveals that the new iOS update also addresses two serious security issues.

Elon Musk Is Maybe, Actually, Strangely, Going to Do This Mars Thing

The little havanese likes to sit in a window of the one-story house, looking out onto the quiet street in Boca Chica, Texas. From its perch, it can watch neighbors passing by, glossy black grackles pecking in the grass, and palm trees swaying in the breeze. The dog’s presence is usually a sign that its owner, Elon Musk, is in town. That, and the Tesla parked in the driveway.

There are other, more conspicuous signs that Musk has gotten comfortable in this remote part of South Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border. The hulking manufacturing tents just down the road. The steel strewn on the ground. The mechanical hum of machinery as workers in hard hats assemble spaceship after spaceship.

Jen Psaki admits Biden taking impromptu reporter questions is ‘not something we recommend’

White House press secretary Jen Psaki admitted in a CNN podcast published Thursday that President Joe Biden taking impromptu questions from reporters "is not something we recommend."

Psaki made the admission while being interviewed by CNN Senior Political Commentator David Axelrod on his podcast "The Axe Files," and claimed that she, at times, even tells Biden to not take questions from reporters.

The two began discussing the subject when Axelrod asked Psaki about a particular instance when Biden inadvertently ran into CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins at the White House, who proceeded to ask the president if a minimum wage increase to $15 would be included in the coronavirus relief package that was signed into law in March.

Bloodbath in Mexico: Another gift of US drug and drone wars

Written by
Ted Galen Carpenter

Washington’s bankrupt drug-war and drone-war initiatives have both come home to roost on America’s own southern border. Decades of U.S. policy ineptitude have empowered Mexico’s drug cartels to the point that they now pose an alarming threat to the country’s basic social order.

Now the violence in Mexico is beginning to exhibit a greater high-tech sophistication. In late April, the Jalisco cartel attacked police in the western state of Michoacan with explosive-laden drones, wounding two officers. It was merely the latest development in just one theater of the country’s ongoing chaos.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The American Comedian Ron White, has one line in his stand-up routine, which seems to very much apply here: "You can't fix stupid!!"

And this has been very much a stupid policy with regard to drugs, on the part of the US government.

Were I in government, I would advocate legalizing EVERYTHING, to take the profit motive away from the cartels. Of course, the private and public prison systems would collectively yell, scream, and holler; they love high recidivism rates, and those high rates are, unfortunately, a result, of how the US incarcerates.

World waits to see where a Chinese booster will come down

In late April, China successfully launched a major component of its planned space station. Since then, the booster that put the component into orbit has been circulating in an unstable orbit, and various tracking organizations are indicating that it's likely to come back in a completely uncontrolled manner. It's a big-enough piece of hardware that some parts are likely to survive until they reach the ground. While odds are that will happen over the ocean, there's no guarantee re-entry won't happen over a populated area.

As Ars' Eric Berger described last year, the Long March 5B has an unusual design. Meant for heavy lifts to orbit, the rocket doesn't have an upper stage; instead, its main stage travels all the way to orbit with its payload. Once there, one option is to leave it in a stable orbit, where it would add to the increasing clutter in low Earth orbit. The alternative is to de-orbit the stage.

Oh What a Lovely New War! False Flagging in the Middle East?

There has been virtually no American media coverage of last week’s arrival of a senior Israeli delegation in Washington to discuss Iran. The delegation included the head of the Israeli external intelligence service Mossad Yossi Cohen and Israel’s National Security Advisor Meir Ben-Shabbat. Their itinerary included briefings at the Pentagon and also with national security and State Department officials at the White House. Lest there be any confusion about the “mission” of the delegation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced unambiguously that his team would be explaining why Iran should not be trusted and that any agreement with it is “fundamentally flawed” in that it opens the door to a nuclear weapon for the Iranians when the deal enters its “sunset” phase after ten years.

Israel cast its fate–‘Apartheid’ –with Nation-State law and dismissal of Palestinian state, says Human Rights Watch

For many years anyone going into the occupied territories came out saying they’d seen apartheid– separate roads for Jews and Palestinians, crippling checkpoints for Palestinians, township areas to which Palestinians were confined and moved. “Apartheid on steroids,” the former chancellor of Brown University said in 2011. “Worse” than apartheid South Africa, a South African told me in 2006.

Now Human Rights Watch has joined the chorus with a bombshell 213-page deeply-documented report alleging the crimes of “apartheid and persecution” that has excited the rage of the rightwing Israel lobby and of course no substantive rebuttal.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel had the chance of creating a thriving, secular, multi-ethnic, multi-religious nation... and blew it, big-time.

That a people who knew, historically, what the true costs of religious and ethnic discrimiation were, in both money and blood, should choose Palestinians as "the other" on whom to inflict this ancient, horrific curse, absolutely blows me away.

As a Christian, I would love to go to the Holy Land, and see, and explore; unfortunately, because I have been very vocal on this site about my concern regarding what Israelis have been doing to the Palestinians, I most likely would get beaten up by a couple of Israel-supporters to the point of never walking again.

Depressing thought, that.

Biden's Ruinous Refugee Dump

Ready or not, here they come. Thanks to Joe Biden, America the Weary will soon open its doors to another 62,500 low-skilled foreigners from the Third World. The sovereign citizens in neighborhoods across our nation where these newcomers will be dumped will have no say in these decisions. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Open borders judges made sure that the wants and needs of ordinary Americans would be subordinated to those of the refugee resettlement racket. There is no recourse under U.S. law to reestablish local control of the process.

Swing States Not Looking Good For Biden

Swing district voters who identify as Republicans and independents promote populist policies mirroring those promoted by former President Donald Trump yet are inclined to shun sharp-tongued insurgents, according to fresh polling from a centrist group that supports pragmatic conservatives.

The Republican Main Street Partnership last month surveyed 600 registered voters across six battleground House districts in the South, Midwest, and Northeast. The data showed exceptionally strong care for “conservative populist policy” reminiscent of the Trump administration’s legislative agenda. At the same time, these Republicans and independents showed opposition to congressional candidates who run as “uncompromising insurgents” intent on shaking up Washington rather than “uphold the institutions of government.”
