Thought for the day

"There is no worse mistake in public leadership than to hold out false hopes soon to be swept away. The British people can face peril or misfortune with fortitude and buoyancy, but they bitterly resent being deceived or finding that those responsible for their affairs are themselves dwelling in a fool's paradise." -- Winston Churchill

Washington rejects ICC probe into Israels murder of Al Jazeera reporter MikeRivero Thu, 12/08/2022 - 09:45

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price on 6 December said the White House opposes Al Jazeera taking the murder of Palestinian-American reporter Shireen Abu Aqla to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The White House held a high-level meeting last week to discuss its approach toward the new Israeli government and the possibility of not engaging with some of its ultranationalist ministers, two U.S. officials told Axios.

Why it matters: It was the first such meeting since the Israeli elections took place on Nov. 1, and it was highly sensitive because Israel is one of the U.S.' closest allies.

Jewish settlers attacked a Palestinian high school near the occupied West Bank city of Nablus on Wednesday, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

Ghassan Daghlas, who monitors settlements activities in the northern West Bank, told WAFA that illegal settlers from the Jewish settlement of Yitzhar stoned the Madama High School for Girls, under protection from the Israeli forces, sparking confrontations with Palestinians.

Israeli soldiers fired tear gas canisters towards protestors and their houses.

There is a good reason why Gadi Eisenkot, a former head of the Israeli military, expressed alarm last week as Benjamin Netanyahu awarded unprecedented powers over the occupation to a far-right settler party in his new government.

Palestinian human rights organization Al-Haq, along with a coalition of other leading Palestinian civil society organizations, have released a new landmark report on Israeli apartheid, titled ‘Israeli Apartheid: Tool of Zionist Settler Colonialism’.

The new report, published November 29, explores apartheid as a “a structural element of furthering Zionist settler colonialism” – a framework previously overlooked by international and Israeli human rights organizations in their own reports on Israeli apartheid.

Al Jazeera has submitted a formal request to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate and prosecute the Israeli soldiers responsible for killing Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu

Israels army chief will not allow interference by incoming supremacist officials MikeRivero Wed, 12/07/2022 - 07:43

Israeli Channel 13 News on 5 December reported the details of a conversation that took place behind closed doors about the Israeli army’s criticism of the incoming government, and how it will break the security establishment’s chain of command.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz ordered the IDF to prepare for the possibility of an escalation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in light of ongoing security tensions and the entry of the new government, the defense minister revealed in an interview with Ynet on Tuesday.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said on Tuesday that no one would question Israeli soldiers, after Al Jazeera filed a lawsuit at the International Criminal Court over the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

"No one will interrogate IDF soldiers and no one will preach to us about morals of combat, certainly not the Al Jazeera network," Lapid said.

Abu Akleh was shot during an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank in May.

Eleven days ago, Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Itamar Ben-Gvir, the far-right Jewish-supremacist, as his Minister of National Security. Netanyahu, who is putting together the next Israeli government, also announced that the Ministry would have expanded powers, especially in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian West Bank.
