"An unconstitutional act is not law.  It confers no rights; it imposes no duties; affords no protection; it creates no office.  It is, in legal contemplation, as inoperative as though it had never been passed." -- Norton v. Shelby County, 118 U.S. 425 (1886)

The 81-year-old US president has been at the centre of several embarrassing moments in the run-up to November's US presidential election. Now, the Wall Street Journal has published a detailed account suggesting Biden struggles with memory issues, confusion over policy details, and often speaks so softly that aides find it difficult to hear him. The report is based on interviews with 45 insiders and notes that Biden sometimes closes his eyes for long periods during meetings. The Wall Street Journal report also described Biden as increasingly reliant on notes and assistance from aides.

He told the reporters: "If someone thinks it is possible to supply such weapons to a war zone to attack our territory and create problems for us, why don't we have the right to supply weapons of the same class to regions of the world where there will be strikes on sensitive facilities of those countries? That is, the response can be asymmetric. We will think about it."

Hundreds troops jumped into a rural drop zone which was used on D-Day 80 years ago. However, they hit the ground, they were greeted not only by cheers from a nearby crowd but French passport officials. The clip then shows them having their documents stamped at a desk in a field. The irony was not lost on Mr Farage, who was in Normandy himself yesterday for a D-Day commemoration. Sharing a clip via X, he commented: “The French Border Force stop our D-Day paratroopers, who are re-enacting, but are happy to let 4,000+ boats cross the Channel. “Why do we pay them all this money?”

Researchers from France published a study in the journal Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety revealing that three out of five sperm samples collected from a French infertility clinic showed high levels of glyphosate, the world's most commonly used weedkiller. "The new research also found evidence of impacts on DNA and a correlation between glyphosate levels and oxidative stress on seminal plasma, suggesting significant impacts on fertility and reproductive health," reported The Guardian (United Kingdom) about the paper.

In February, two Swedish researchers published their study of plant megafossils in the Swedish Scandes and determined that Sweden was 2-3oC warmer between 6,000-16,800 years ago. While there has been warming in this region recently, the warming is within natural Holocene climate variability and poses no threat to these landscapes. Instead, warming may enhance biodiversity in this region.

Dear Normal People: Disney freakin hates you, especially if you’re a Star Wars fan. Please tell me you are not actually paying for Disney+. Please-please-please tell me you are not funding billions of dollars in propaganda designed to only do two things: 1) annihilate your child, and 2) piss you off.

On Monday, the Sunday Times ran an article questioning the decision of Reform U.K. to propose a public inquiry into COVID-19 excess deaths and “controversially” —its words — “vaccine harms”. The article’s author, a prominent political editor, writes, “I ask Tice [then-leader of Reform] whether these pledges risk legitimising dangerous conspiracy theories at a time when Britain is experiencing a resurgence in measles.” Both the comment, and the apparent assuredness with which it was penned, struck me as curious. Barely 10 days ago, British front pages were awash with the report of the Inquiry into the U.K.’s contaminated blood scandal.

NASA has confirmed that the time has come: the venerable Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is to run in one-gyro mode from now on. The observatory has six gyroscopes, installed during the final Space Shuttle servicing mission in 2009, but over the years, three have failed. A fourth began showing signs of wear, resulting in the spacecraft dropping into safe mode in April. That event has now resulted in engineers deciding the time has come for the HST to transition into a mode whereby it can be pointed using only one gyro. The mode requires other instruments onboard the spacecraft to be used for pointing the telescope as well as a single gyroscope. According to NASA, the technique was already demonstrated in 2008 "with no impact to science observation quality."

If you haven't yet upgraded to version 1.3.0 of Apache HugeGraph, now's a good time because at least two proof-of-concept exploits for a CVSS 9.8-rated remote command execution bug in the open-source graph database have been made public. Apache HugeGraph lets developers build applications based on graph databases and is commonly used in Java 8 and Java 11 environments. In late April, the Apache Software Foundation disclosed a critical vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-27348, in versions of HugeGraph-Server 1.0.0 before April’s 1.3.0 release. Now exploit code to find and crack such systems is on GitHub.

Retail stores are being shut down at a staggering rate all over the country.  If we stay on the pace that we are on, the total number of stores closed in 2024 will be nearly 40 percent higher than the total number of stores closed in 2023.  That is what you call a crisis!  Meanwhile, banks are shuttering hundreds of branches from coast to coast, and a “restaurant apocalypse” is sweeping across the nation.  Everywhere around us, “space available” signs are going up on buildings that were once considered to be prime commercial real estate.  If someone tries to convince you that the U.S. economy is in good shape, just show them this article and ask them why so many once prosperous businesses are closing.  Needless to say, they will not be able to win the argument after that.
